Abstract: This paper is an analysis of the existent bibliography about the significance of a fast internet network for a country, and how it affects the GDP and the research and educational system. From this point of view, we can analyze which models have been adopted today in the world and in Brazil, and, using case studies, identify which are the socioeconomic impacts of these networks. Three study cases where selected with the aim of demonstrate the impacts that a fast internet network generate in institutions and to the communities; the three cases are very different one to the other, what contributes to visualize these impacts. The three cases are the use of the Telemedicina by the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), the use of basics and advanced services of internet by the National Institute of Spatial Studies (INPE) and the availability of internet services to the Campus of Benjamin Constant from the Federal University of Amanzonas (UFAM). Analyzing these cases, it's possible to verify that a national public high speed internet network can generate several kinds of impacts according to the specificities of the region of the country and the special needs of the institution. But, in a general way, it's possible to verify that there are positive impacts and that network helps the development of research and education
