Resumo: The theory of unequal exchange between what is contemporarily and popularly referred to as the global north and the global south has been around forever in some form but empirical evidence of the same is relatively new. This unequal exchange started with the exploitation of the then colonies by the colonizers and though the second world war marked the end of colonization in its most discreet form it has been rightly argued that only form of colonization had changed and though the armies marched out with their flags, systems of financial exploitation remained intact. The second world war saw the rise of international institutions to regulate finances across the globe that were under the influence of the colonizers – the governments of the global north. With new studies and awakening of the global south, governments in the global south have upped the ante of south south cooperation but the financial institutions are built in a way governments can only do so much. The civil society has to participate actively and cooperate among themselves to influence policy decisions in the countries/the block to ensure that this unequal exchange is checked to create a more equitable, a fairer world. Trade unions are important civil society organizations that have a say in the policy making process and presence in Multinational Corporations (MNCs), the tools of appropriation of wealth created in Global south in various forms through methods currently legal and illegal, and hence are the best suited to start a campaign against this unequal exchange. The trade unions also meet as part of several forums and it is imaginable to create a forum of trade unions in the global south or smaller blocks thereof. A well coordinated effort by trade union organizations can prove to be highly impactful in this regard. The dissertation will discuss the issue in three chapters. The 1st chapter introduces the research design and acquaints the readers with the theory of unequal exchange as well as hints at the exploitative capitalist financial systems. The 2nd chapter discusses the framework of south-south cooperation and possibility of trade union cooperation within the framework and the third chapter presents and explores the possibility of trade union cooperation in the textile sector in South Asia as a case study and finally makes some recommendations based on prior experiences of such cooperation in other regions of the world before the conclusion Ver menos

Abstract: A teoria da troca desigual entre o que é contemporânea e popularmente referido como o norte global e o sul global existe desde sempre, de alguma forma, mas a evidência empírica da mesma é relativamente nova. Essa troca desigual começou com a exploração das então colônias, tendo a Segunda Guerra Mundial marcado o fim da colonização em sua forma mais direta, sendo argumentado, com razão, que apenas a forma de colonização havia mudado e, enquanto os exércitos abandonaram os territórios, os sistemas de exploração financeira permaneceram intactos. A Segunda Guerra Mundial assistiu ao surgimento de instituições internacionais com vista a regular as finanças globais que estavam sob a influência dos colonizadores. Os governos do norte global. Novos estudos e o despertar dos governos do sul global aumentaram a aposta da cooperação sul-sul, mas as instituições financeiras limitam as possibilidades da sua ação. A sociedade civil tem que participar ativamente e cooperar entre si para influenciar as decisões políticas nos países/blocos para garantir que essa troca desigual seja substituída por um mundo mais equitativo e justo. Os sindicatos são importantes organizações da sociedade civil que têm uma palavra a dizer no processo de formulação de políticas públicas e na presença de multinacionais, as ferramentas de apropriação da riqueza criada no Sul global, através de métodos atualmente legais e ilegais e, portanto, os espaços mais adequados para iniciar uma campanha contra essa troca desigual. Os sindicatos também se reúnem em vários fóruns e é expectável a criação de um fórum de sindicatos no sul global ou em blocos menores do mesmo. Um esforço bem coordenado por organizações sindicais pode revelar-se altamente impactante. O trabalho discutirá o assunto em três capítulos. O primeiro capítulo apresenta o desenho da pesquisa e familiariza os leitores com a teoria da troca desigual, bem como com os sistemas financeiros capitalistas exploradores. O segundo capítulo discute o quadro de cooperação sul-sul e possibilidade de cooperação sindical dentro deste e o terceiro capítulo explora a possibilidade de cooperação sindical no setor têxtil no sul da Ásia como um estudo de caso e, finalmente, faz algumas recomendações com base em experiências de cooperação noutras regiões Ver menos
