Resumo: Até meados do século XX a historiografia tendia a argumentar que o fim do Império Carolíngio na Europa por volta do ano 900 foi definido pelo enfraquecimento do poder político dos reis, o que teria provocado rupturas no exercício da autoridade e na manutenção da ordem pública. As abordagens mais recentes, porém, ressaltam elementos pouco considerados por essas interpretações, notadamente a importância dos clérigos, figuras muito influentes na época. Sua participação ativa na sociedade sinaliza a complexidade do quadro político em que operavam, que emergiu como uma consequência do desenvolvimento carolíngio. Em diálogo com tais pontos de vista, esta dissertação visa compreender os alcances e os limites do poder eclesiástico num momento de transformações significativas. Para tanto, serão feitas as reconstituições das trajetórias e das redes de contato de Ratério (890-974) e Folcuíno (940-990), indivíduos que compartilharam uma formação monástica beneditina semelhante, mas desempenharam papeis variados na sociedade enquanto bispo e monge, respectivamente. Por intermédio da análise dos seus textos e das fontes existentes nos contextos nos quais estiveram inseridos, este trabalho investigará as suas margens de influência nas tomadas de decisão, destacando a importância da atuação monástica e episcopal durante as remodelações da sociedade pós-carolíngia. Abstract: Until the middle of the 20th century scholarship tended to argue that the end of the Carolingian Empire in Europe around the year 900 was defined by the weakening of the political power of kings, which caused ruptures in the exercise of authority and in the maintenance of public order. More recent approaches, however, highlight elements neglected by these interpretations, most notably the importance of clerics, who were very influential figures at this time. Their active participation in society shows the complexity of the political framework they were operating in, which emerged as a result of Carolingian developments. In dialogue with these points of view, this dissertation aims to understand the scope and the limits of the ecclesiastical power at a time of significant transformations. To achieve this goal, we will reconstitute the career trajectories and the networks of contacts of Rather (890-974) and Folcuin (940-990), individuals who shared a similar monastic Benedictine formation, but played different roles within society, as bishop and monk, respectively. Through the analysis of their texts and the examination of the sources in the contexts in which they were inserted, this project will investigate their influences on decision making, highlighting the importance of monastic and episcopal action during the remodeling of post-carolingian society. Therefore, we will argue that the political dynamics in the 10th century must be understood considering the centrality of the ecclesiastical power, marked by a transitory character, and based on the intersection with the secular sphere Ver menos
