Resumo: Esta tese propõe uma investigação sobre os diferentes posicionamentos da crítica e teoria literária brasileira das décadas de 1970-1980 considerando três eixos principais: o estruturalismo, o regionalismo e o modernismo. Para tanto, utilizaremos as produções de Roberto Schwarz, Luiz Costa Lima, Silviano Santiago e José Guilherme Merquior ao longo dessas duas décadas. O problema central se refere aos diferentes posicionamentos dos críticos diante do estruturalismo e como essas diferentes posturas condicionam a crítica literária brasileira. O estruturalismo ganhou força no Brasil na década de 1970, quando recebeu diversas críticas de Roberto Schwarz e José Guilherme Merquior, e foi absorvido em suas modalidades diversas por Luiz Costa Lima e Silviano Santiago. Essa disputa ressaltou, por um lado, a força da dialética entre forma e processo social; de outro, a defesa do caráter autônomo do texto literário em relação aos fatores socioeconômicos. Portanto, a hipótese inicial deste projeto se desdobra em duas partes: 1) as divergências em relação ao estruturalismo geram disputas no campo da crítica literária, sobretudo através da crítica ao regionalismo e aos movimentos de vanguarda presente na estética modernista de 1920. 2) O debate em torno do estruturalismo ultrapassa a oposição binária entre crítica engajada e crítica formalista. Assim, o estudo destes quatro autores permitirá discutir: 1) a relação entre os problemas da constituição da teoria literária no Brasil e as disputas na crítica literária. 2) a relação que se estabelece entre a teoria e crítica literária brasileira e a teoria estrangeira, sobretudo no que concerne ao estruturalismo. 3) os problemas da institucionalização dos estudos literários no Brasil Ver menos

Abstract: This thesis proposes an analysis of the different positions of Brazilian literary criticism and theory in the 1970s and 1980s, considering three main points: structuralism, regionalism, and modernism. Thus, we will use Roberto Schwarz, Luiz Costa Lima, Silviano Santiago and José Guilherme Merquior’s productions throughout these two decades. The central point refers to the different critics’ positions in the face of structuralism and how these different aspects determine Brazilian literary criticism. Structuralism gained ground in Brazil in the 1970s, when it received several criticisms from Roberto Schwarz and José Guilherme Merquior, and it was absorbed in its various categories by Luiz Costa Lima and Silviano Santiago. This dispute highlighted, on the one hand, the dialectic strength between form and social process; on the other, the defense of the literary text’s autonomous character in relation to socioeconomic factors. Therefore, the initial hypothesis of this project unfolds in two parts: 1) the divergences in relation to structuralism generate disputes in the field of literary criticism, especially through the criticism of regionalism and the avant-garde movements present in the modernist aesthetics of the 1920s. 2) The debate around structuralism goes beyond the binary opposition between engaged criticism and formalist criticism.
