Abstract: In this work, the photovoltaic effect was studied in some photorefractive crystals of the silenite family, Bi12TiO20 nominally undoped and Pb-doped and Bi12SiO20 nominally undoped by non-holographic technique. We showed for the first time that these materials have a non-linear photovoltaic effect with the intensity of light and that this effect can be described by the two photoactive centers model. We also show by a detailed analysis that the results of the measurements of the photovoltaic effect in the materials indicate that the center responsible for the photovoltaic effect is not one of the centers of the model that results in other effects of the material, such as the photochromic effect. The results on the nonlinear photovoltaic effect presented by the silenites were published in the international circulation journal Optical Materials. We also describe the photovoltaic current in photorefractive crystal Bi2TeO5 and find the parameters that characterize the current and the recording of holographic gratings in these materials by ?=532 nm wavelength light. We studied the behavior of this material under high light intensity and found the presence of fast and slow holographic gratings, both of which are photorefractive in nature, showing a significant dependence on the intensity of illumination in the range 1-13 KW/m². A permanent grating was found after the complete erasure of the fast and slow holograms recorded at room temperature. The experimental results show that the diffraction efficiency of the permanent grating increases with the light intensity of the recording process. The performance of the permanent grating as an optical Bragg filter was characterized by measuring the angular selectivity of approximately 0.18 mrad. We also show that the diffraction efficiency of the permanent grating is dependent on the direction of light polarization
