Abstract: Since the 1970s, the harvesting of janaguba latex (Figures 10.1b, 10.1c and 10.1d) has become a source of income for many communities in the Cariri region, northeastern Brazil, where the commercialization of the latex typically represents from 30% to 50% of the total family income (Franca 2006, Baldauf and Vieira-da-Silva, 2013). It is estimated that at least 300 families are involved in this activity in the region (Franca 2006); however, this number has been growing over the past five years (Baldauf and Santos 2013). Approximately 8,700 litres of latex are harvested annually (Franca 2006), of which 75% is marketed and the rest is for domestic use (Baldauf and Vieira-da-Silva, unpubl. report)
