Resumo: Esta dissertação tem por objetivo resgatar as contribuições da obra do intelectual e líder político caribenho Eric Williams (1911-1981) à historiografia sobre a escravidão negra nas Américas. A partir da crítica radical à interpretação humanitária, em particular ao establishment de Oxford, responsável por enraizar a narrativa baseada na autoproclamada superioridade dos valores morais e ideológicos que justificaram a liderança do Império Britânico em uma "missão civilizatória", Williams edificou sua interpretação introduzindo no debate as questões econômicas responsáveis pelos processos de estabelecimento, expansão e extinção da escravidão nas colônias britânicas das Índias Ocidentais. Para atender ao objetivo proposto, reconstituiremos a concepção de Williams desde The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery, a tese de doutorado apresentada na Universidade de Oxford em 1938, até sua principal obra, Capitalismo e Escravidão, publicada em 1944. Revisitar o livro clássico tendo como referência o trabalho que o originou permitirá reavaliar as principais ideias sobre a interpretação econômica do fim da escravidão no Império Britânico. Com isso, espera-se construir uma reflexão em torno da importância e atualidade das "Teses de Williams" que possam subsidiar as futuras tentativas de reabilitar o debate sobre as relações entre a escravidão e a formação do capitalismo em novos termos, questões e perspectivas Ver menos

Abstract: This dissertation aims to retrieve the contributions of caribbean scholar and political leader Eric Williams (1911-1981) to black slavery historiography in the Americas. Starting with radical criticism to humanitarian interpretation, particularly to the Oxford establishment, responsible for ingraining the narrative based on the self-proclaimed superiority of moral and ideological values that justified the leadership of the British Empire in a "Civilizing Mission", Williams build his interpretation introducing in the debate the economic questions responsible for slavery settlement, expansion and extinction processes in the british colonies of the West Indies. To reach the proposed goal, we will recuperate Williams framework from his doctoral thesis, The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery, presented at Oxford University in 1938 to his masterpiece, Capitalism and Slavery, published in 1944. Revisit the classic book having as reference the work that originated it will allow us to reevaluate the main ideas about the economic interpretation of the end of slavery in the British Empire. With that, we hope to build a reflection on the importance and topicality of "Williams Thesis" that may subsidize future attempts to rehabilitate the debate about the relationship between slavery and the formation of capitalism in new terms, questions and perspectives Ver menos
