Resumo: O presente trabalho resulta de um estudo feminista sobre o romance The Handmaid’s Tale (1996), da autora canadense Margaret Atwood, e pretende incidir sobre o texto literário como ficção em diálogo com a História, tendo como pano de fundo principal a temática da maternidade. A despeito da reprodução ser seu mais evidente tópico, o romance da escritora contemporânea também possibilita discussões acerca da mudez e de seu rompimento a partir da literatura que, no caso, outorga voz a uma mulher silenciada e a um homem que pretende falar em seu lugar. A existência de duas vozes, que marcam a divisão da narrativa em dois segmentos, é medular à presente discussão, pois instiga a reflexão sobre o estatuto dos sujeitos nas narrativas literária e histórica. Por fim, o debate sobre a expressão literária da mulher assume o olhar feminista sobre autoria e leitura, que, por sua vez, abrem espaço para a revelação de vozes silenciadas em discursos narrativos, sejam estes históricos ou ficcionais Ver menos

Abstract: The following work is the result of a feminist study on The Handmaid’s Tale (1996), by the Canadien author Margaret Atwood, and intends to examine the literary text as fiction in dialogue with History, having as main background the theme of motherhood. Although reproduction is the most evident topic, the contemporary writer’s novel also allows discussions on the silence and its rupture stemming from literature which, in this case, gives voice to a silenced woman and to a man who intends to speak in her name. The existence of two voices, that marks the division of the narrative into two segments, is central to the present discussion, once it instigates the reflection on the position of subjects in literary and historical narratives. Finally, the debate on woman’s literary expression undertakes the feminist perspective on authorship and reading, which, in their turn, unfold space to the revelation of muted voices in narrative discourses, whether historical or fictional Ver menos
