Resumo: Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo realizar um estudo crítico das imagens, com ênfase na cinematografia, atentando-se para dois aspectos principais: em primeiro lugar, a formação e a construção do olhar e, em segundo, as relações de poder que compreendem os privilégios estabelecidos por meio de tais relações. Esse movimento resulta em uma visualidade em disputa, norteada, principalmente, por relações étnico-raciais e, também, de gênero. O trabalho se divide em três momentos. Em um primeiro momento lidamos com o vasto campo da representação de imagens raciais da branquitude, por meio de referências e amostras da construção do olhar da autoridade no contexto ocidental. Na segunda parte, investigamos, de um lado, os apagamentos e, de outro, os contrapontos significativos de imagens da negritude, considerando suas lógicas constitutivas. No último segmento deste estudo, revisitamos o direito de ver e ser visto, descortinados pela potência da autorrepresentação negra a partir do uso de imagens históricas, visões e narrativas redescobertas. Adotamos um caráter mais ensaístico na tese, de modo a analisarmos pontualmente as particularidades dos temas e recortes de cada um dos capítulos. Esta pesquisa gravita em torno dos estudos culturais e da cultura visual, nos contextos anglo-saxões, a partir de abordagens de Richard Dyer, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Stuart Hall, entre outros. Abstract: This research aims to carry out a critical study of images, with an emphasis on cinematography, paying attention to two main aspects: first, the formation and construction of the look and, second, the power relations that comprise the established privileges through such relationships. This movement results in a contested visuality, guided mainly by ethnic-racial and also gender relations. The work is divided into three moments. At first, we deal with the vast field of representation of racial images of whiteness, through references and samples of the construction of the look of authority in the Western context. In the second part, we investigate, on the one hand, the erasures and, on the other, the significant counterpoints of images of blackness, considering their constitutive logics. In the last segment of this study, we revisited the right to see and be seen, unveiled by the power of black self-representation from the use of rediscovered historical images, visions and narratives. We adopted a more essayistic character in the thesis, in order to punctually analyze the particularities of the themes and excerpts of each of the chapters. This research revolves around cultural studies and visual culture, in Anglo-Saxon contexts, based on approaches by Richard Dyer, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Stuart Hall, among others.
