Abstract: This dissertation discusses about quality and importance of Science and Geography textbooks in use in the 6th grades of elementary school II in the municipal schools of Maceió-AL, valid from 2017 - 2019. Highlight to the relevance of the teaching of Geology in basic education in the face of the formation of children and young people, since these have decisive roles in the development and balance of this Planet. The reflections based on the legislation that governs the continuing education of teachers are important, since they are the main responsible for selecting the textbooks that will be used for the elaboration and accomplishment of the classes, in addition, often the textbook is the access to reliable sources of systematized knowledge, since there are several electronic means accessible to students with different types of information. In the research schedule we adopted the qualitative and quantitative bibliographic documentary content analysis and questionnaire developed in 3 stages: 1) Pre-analysis; 2) Exploitation of material or coding; 3) Treatment of results and interference. In this last stage the analysis was divided into three categories: a) texts through concepts and aspects; b) visual representations (maps, photographs and illustrations / schematic representations); c) activities (theoretical and practical exercises). With the defined method, we worked with the theme Geology, determining the following contents: Geologic Time Scale; The Structure of the of the Earth; Tectonic Plates Theories; Minerals and Rocks; Natural Phenomena of Geological Origin: volcanism, earthquake and tsunami); Soil: formation process, types and characteristics. Among the main results obtained are identified problems related to the concepts incomplete and disconnected definitions. In relation to the visual representations, problems in the graphic quality and absence of the main elements that aid in the reading and interpretation of the representation. In the case of the activities, it was verified that the objective and subjective questions prevail, favoring in the transmission of information in a proposal that more value the learning with emphasis in memorization
