Abstract: A visible light communication (VLC) system with intensity modulation and direct detection is considered. A channel coding scheme based on a binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) code and M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is designed. The LDPC encoder is followed by a many-to-one mapper. This mapper induces the input distribution for the non-equally spaced M-PAM alphabet under a desired dimming target. No auxiliary coding technique for DC-balance is needed. The coded scheme using non-equally probable M-PAM levels outperforms the use of equally probable levels showing capacity-approaching performance. Moreover, the scheme is flicker-free for typical information rates of a VLC system. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is that it does not incur any coding rate loss compared to other similar schemes in the literature

Abstract: Organizations need appropriate anticipative information to support their decision making process. Contrarily to some strategic information analyses that help managers to establish patterns using past information, anticipative intelligence is intended to help managers to act based on the analysis of pieces of information that indicate some sort of trend that may become true in the future. One example of this kind of information is known as a weak signal, which is a short text related to a specific domain. In this work, pairs of weak signals, written in Portuguese, are compared to each other so that similarities can be identified and correlated weak signals can be clustered together. The idea is that the analysis of the resulting similar groups may lead to the formulation of a hypothesis that can support the decision making process. The proposed technique consists of two main steps: preprocessing the set of weak signals and clustering. The proposed method was evaluated on a database of bio-energy weak signals. The main innovations of this work are: (i) the application of a computational methodology from the literature for analyzing anticipative information; and (ii) the adaptation of data mining techniques to implement this methodology in a software product

Abstract: A compact rectenna using a microstrip patch antenna based on a fractal model and with the rectifier circuit integrated into the same physical structure has been designed and implemented. The proposed compact rectenna, implemented on a low cost FR-4 substrate, can harverst RF power from 2.4 GHz (ISM band) with a good efficiency (~48%). The suggested rectenna has been manufactured and experimentally characterized, showing a good agreement with the expected simulated results

Abstract: This paper presents the design of a compact-integrated reconfigurable rectenna array containing 2x2 compact microstrip patch antennas based on a fractal model with the rectifier circuit integrated into the same physical structure and usable in practical conditions. In this array configuration, four rectennas were mounted in a planar structure with total dimensions of 85x85 mm using FR-4 dielectric and with reconfigurable DC output that was tested in three ways: series-association, parallel-association and series-parallel association. In the series-association the rectenna array was able to generate the DC power that reached 6.51 V and maximum efficiency of 64.5%; in the parallel-association it generated the DC power that reached 1.58 V and maximum efficiency of 65.3%; in series-parallel-association it generated the DC power that reached 3.00 V and maximum efficiency of 64.5%. The results showed that rectennas in array configuration are feasible to be used as power supplies to electronic devices in real situations

Abstract: Matrix reordering is an Information Visualization topic that aims to study how to reveal information hidden within matrix-based visualizations, through appropriate reordering of its rows and columns. Considering the plethora of algorithms currently available to perform this task, and the set of matrix patterns presented in the visualization literature, we noted a lack of a comprehensive comparative analysis related to a subset of these patterns, known as canonical data patterns. Thus, this work aimed to perform a broad comparison of 37 state-of-the-art reordering algorithms by measuring the efficiency (execution time) and effectiveness (which combines objective functions as Moore Neighborhood, Minimal Span Loss Function and Circular Correlation, and a qualitative approach by visually assessing the output matrices) of the algorithms. We used as input a large synthetic matrix data set with different canonical data patterns. As a result, it was possible to indicate the most appropriate reordering algorithms for each pattern considered

Abstract: Text streams are a continuous flow of high-dimensional text, transmitted at high-volume and high-velocities. They are expected to be classified in real-time, which is challenging due to the high dimensionality of feature space. Applying feature selection algorithms is one solution to reduce text streams feature space and improve the learning process. However, since text streams are potentially unbounded, it is expected a change in their probabilistic distribution over time, the so-called Concept Drift. The concept drift impacts the feature selection process due to the feature drift when the relevance of features is also subject to changes over time. This paper presents a comparative study of six feature selection methods for binary text streams classification, even in the presence of feature drift. We also propose the Online Feature Selection with Evolving Regularization (OFSER) algorithm, a modified version of the Online Feature Selection (OFS) algorithm, which uses evolving regularization to dynamically penalize model complexity, reducing feature drift impacts on the feature selection process. We conducted the experimental analysis on eleven real-world, commonly used datasets for text classification. The OFSER algorithm showed F1-scores up to 12.92% higher than other algorithms in some cases. The results using Iman and Davenport and Bergmann–Hommel’s tests show that OFSER algorithm is statistically superior to Information Gain and Extremal Feature Selection algorithms in terms of improving the base classifier predictive power

Abstract: Net Present Value (NPV) measures whether an investment will be profitable within a given period of time. In oil production planning, it consists of an important indicator to evaluate different production strategies. The NPV estimate is calculated on the basis of the production data which are generally obtained by means of numerical simulations, which consider the strategy details and the physical reservoir model. However, the simulator demands high computational resource, which may take hours or days of processing time to evaluate a single strategy, depending on the size of the reservoir model. To speed up this process a simpler model, referred to as a surrogate model, can be used to approximate the simulator output. In this work, we hypothesize that it is possible to predict the NPV using only wells arrangement data as predictors. Moreover, we present a comparison among six machine learning algorithms used as a surrogate model: Linear Regression, K-Nearest Neighbor, Multi-Layer Perceptron, Kernel Ridge Regression, Support Vector Regression, and Gradient Tree Boosting. Results confirm it is viable to predict NPV from wells arrangement data, in special with kernel-based methods

Abstract: Net Present Value (NPV) is an important indicator to guide investment decisions. In oil production planning, NPV is employed to evaluate and select among different production strategies. However, NPV estimation requires computational costly numerical simulations. So, evaluating as many production strategies as is desirable may be prohibitive. Therefore, one can only evaluate a small part of the search space, decreasing the chance of finding a near-optimal production strategy. To speed up the searching process, a much faster, but error-prone, surrogate model is used to approximate the simulator output. Data-driven surrogate modeling depends on both: 1) building a simple model to reproduce the quality of a high-fidelity model, while 2) considering a large volume of data to build it. In this work, we address the well placement optimization task by considering a binary data representation, indicating the presence or absence of a given well in a production strategy. We show the possibility of predicting the NPV from binary data, thus reducing data dimension and model complexity. Specifically, we compare six machine learning regression algorithms to predict the NPV. The simulations conducted in a benchmark case, based on a real field, showed that some regression algorithms can be used as a surrogate model to the simulator to efficiently perform well placement optimization considering binary data. The best results were obtained with Multi-Layer Perceptron, whose estimations covered a wide range of NPV with a small and constant error

Abstract: The literature on weak signals (WS) has been fruitful in recent years and this specific type of information has attracted the attention of several disciplines, notably the futures studies. However, most of these studies still focus on conceptual discussions, terminology, or the proposal for frameworks that do not take advantage of the evolution of information and communication technologies. In this paper, authors discussed the lack of tools to computationally support WS handling. In response to this lack, a computational tool was developed considering a previously published method for WS classification based on conceptual systems. This tool was applied and evaluated in experimental cases about surprising events that occurred in politics in recent years, considering traditional metrics of information retrieval. Experiments illustrate that organizations can create several conceptual systems to represent different scenarios and types of knowledge; after all, results showed that the tool can operate according to different artifacts of knowledge representation. This capacity is useful to mitigate the effects of the surveillance filter though the evidence does not directly confirm its usefulness for the monitoring activities. Furthermore, the tool provides a list of threats, opportunities and unlabeled WS that can trigger other steps of sensemaking about these signals

Abstract: In this article, we model the dependence between dam factor and D max, where dam factor is an indicator of risk of a tailings dam failure, which involves the height H of the tailings dam, the volume of material housed by the tailings dam VT and the volume dispensed by the tailings dam, VF, when the dam breaks. And, Dmax is the maximum distance traveled by the material released by the tailings dam, after the collapse. With the dependence found via copula models and Bayesian estimation, given a range of dam factor, we estimate the probability of the released material to exceed a certain threshold. Since the dam factor involves the released volume VF (unknown before the dam break), we present a naive way to estimate it using VT and H. In this way, it is possible to estimate the dam factor of a tailings dam and with such a value to identify the probability of the tailings dam to show a Dmax that exceeds a certain threshold

Resumo: O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar os elementos que constituem a cultura organizacional e a forma como eles influenciam nos processos de recrutamento e seleção de pessoas em uma empresa de celulose localizada no município de Três Lagoas/MS. O tema torna-se relevante mediante a expressão nacional e internacional da mesma, bem como os impactos econômicos, sociais e ambientais ocasionados por ela na região. A partir da pesquisa percebeu-se que a cultura organizacional é consolidada e influencia positivamente no processo de recrutamento e seleção. Vale ressaltar que o primeiro passo na procura de pessoal é o recrutamento interno, pois oferece oportunidades aos funcionários já existentes na organização, no entanto são utilizados os recursos externos e também misto. Abstract: Data stream mining has attracted much attention of the machine learning community in the last decade. Motivated by the upcoming issues associated with data stream applications, such as concept drift and the velocity into which data needs to be processed, several methods have been proposed in the literature, most of them resulting from adaptations of traditional algorithms. Such methods are forced to satisfy hard requirements of restricted memory and processing time, while keeping track of the performance at the same time. In the classification context, ensembles are an effective and elegant way to handle this task. And mostly, the bottleneck of processing time and memory of an ensemble relies on the employed base learner and on the ensemble updating policy. This paper addresses both issues by proposing: 1) a fast base learning algorithm, which relies on discretizing every attribute range into disjoint intervals and associating, to each of them, a posterior probability relating it to a class; and 2) a static ensemble that comprises such base learners and handles concept drift without replacing base learners. Results comparing the proposed ensemble method to six ensemble approaches, on artificial and real data streams, showed it yields comparable results but with lower computational time; which makes the proposed ensemble an efficient alternative to high-speed data streams

Abstract: In a dynamic distributed system with a very large number of nodes, such as a cloud, it issometimes useful to discover the nodes that are up in the system at a given time. The number of those nodes changes continually along the operation time, as some nodes crash and some join the system. In this paper we introduce a presence service that was implemented over a gossip structure using an epidemic multicast protocol. Unlike other common presence services, our service is fully distributed. Due to epidemic dissemination and inherent redundancy provided by the multicast protocol, the service is resilient against message loss and link crashes. In a scenario we developed to evaluate the efficiency and scalability of our presence service, we show how presence notifications propagate to reach all nodes in the group and we also show how adjustments for the gossip configuration can benefit the efficiency and resilience of the notification dissemination. The results of the experimental evaluation show that following a distributed approach over epidemic communication leads to a resilient and scalable presence service

Abstract: Expensive multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems have constraints in the number of objective function evaluations due to time, financial, or resource restrictions. As most combinatorial problems, they are subject to a high number of duplicated solutions. Given the fact that expensive environments limit the number of objective function evaluations, the existence of duplicated solutions heavily impacts the optimization process due to poor diversity and low convergence speed. This paper proposes the Novel-First Tabu Search, a greedy-strategy mechanism that uses Knowledge-Assisted Local Search methods to preserve the population diversity and increase the exploration and exploitation ability of MOEA/D. Experiments are conducted on constrained, unconstrained, multimodal, deceptive, linear, convex, and non-convex Pareto Front multi-objective combinatorial optimization benchmark problems. This paper also conducts an experiment on the real-world, expensive problem of Well Placement Optimization using a benchmark case based on the Namorado oil field, located in the Campos Basin, Brazil. The experimental results and performance comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms demonstrate that the proposed design significantly preserves diversity and increases convergence without violating the constraint in the number of objective function evaluations

Abstract: Variations in electric impedance curves of piezoeletric transducers occur under influence of mechanical load, temperature, electric excitation, among others. Electronic circuits for driving these transducers should correct the tune to maintain the performance of the transducer. Considering the changes at resonance, we have developed a circuit for a laboratory bench that performs two functions. The first, working on low power, by swapping frequencies around resonance, allows to the user define electric impedance and frequency operation that intend to apply in the experiment. The operation of this circuit is based on detection of magnitude of current in the transducer. A microcontroller and Labview are used to obtain the results. In the second, while under high power operation, deviations from original impedance are corrected by using a feedback network that evaluates amplitude of impedance. In this circuit, a class D MOSFET amplifier is used for exciting the transducer. Also, a microcontroller system controls the feedback network. Experiments with variation of mechanical loads have shown the effectiveness of the system

Resumo: O desenvolvimento do trabalho com a Educação Ambiental (EA) na escola pode trazer inúmeras transformações para esse contexto, pois nesse ambiente, de convívio social, acontecem as principais relações entre as crianças. A integração da EA com a Educação Nutricional (EN) desperta o prazer e o interesse por uma vida saudável. Sendo assim, o trabalho desenvolvido teve como objetivo apresentar aos alunos da educação infantil, informações sobre alimentação saudável e propiciar a mudanças nos hábitos alimentares dos mesmos. O trabalho foi realizado a partir de atividades pedagógicas lúdicas, atividades expositivas e construção de uma horta para plantio de alimentos. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a EA e a EN, quando trabalhadas em conjunto, é eficaz na transformação de hábitos e quando acontece no meio escolar também propicia mudanças fora desse ambiente

Resumo: Fortalecer ações voltadas à qualificação da educação formal e o respeito ao meio ambiente são pontos prioritários para atingir a melhoria esperada para a educação no país. Acredita-se que utilizar a Educação Ambiental (EA), conforme Lei Federal nº9.795/99, na Educação Infantil (EI) o indivíduo pode exercitar a cidadania, desenvolver a solidariedade, o respeito e a responsabilidade, através do desenvolvimento de valores éticos e morais, compreendendo que são seres dignos de direitos e deveres. Esta proposta tem como objetivo ações que busca motivar professores da EI, entorno de ações de preservação e multiplicação de conhecimentos através da sensibilização e conscientização dos alunos na preservação do meio ambiente. Verificou-se que a EA efetivamente inserida na educação formal, pode contribuir para uma real mudança do indivíduo como ser transformador do meio ambiente

Resumo: A palavra "entropia" surgiu no ano de 1864, nos trabalhos de Termodinâmica de Rudolf Clausius. Em 1948, Claude E. Shannon utiliza esse mesmo nome para designar uma medida de informação em seu modelo matemático de comunicação, fundamentado nos conceitos de emissor, receptor, canal, ruído, redundância, codificação e decodificação. Com a medida de informação H(X)=-C*sum_{i=1}^n[pi*log (pi)], a entropia de Shannon, torna-se possível analisar a capacidade do canal de comunicação e investir em tratamentos de dados, dando origem ao que se chama atualmente de Teoria da Informação. Além dos aspectos operacionais e tecnológicos da teoria de Shannon, que revelam a era digital, as abordagens matemáticas acerca da fórmula H(X) acabam por revelar também uma vertente voltada às caracterizações de medidas de informação. Entende-se que uma exposição didática da dedução matemática da fórmula de entropia de Shannon, com base em um conjunto de axiomas, seja interessante não somente no sentido pedagógico, mas também para o entendimento da teoria de Shannon. Mostra-se, desse modo, que essa fórmula está imersa em um contexto matemático bem definido (um sistema com axiomas e equações funcionais), que permite, com alterações nos axiomas, definir novas medidas de informação

Abstract: Reorderable matrices may be used as support for tabular displays such as heatmaps. Matrix reordering algorithms provide an initial permutation of these matrices, which should help to reveal hidden patterns in the dataset in the visual structure. Some of these algorithms directly permute the data matrix, instead of its row- and column-proximity matrices. We present a data matrix reordering method (feature vector-based sort – FVS), which reorders a data matrix aiming to reveal simplex and equi-correlation patterns. Our approach extracts feature vectors from a data matrix and uses them to calculate row and column permutations of the data matrix. We used FVS for reordering data matrices of distinct real-world scenarios, in which it revealed those patterns. Our experiments with synthetic matrices revealed that FVS is faster than other known matrix-reordering algorithms and produces results of approximately the same quality (in terms of stress function) when these patterns are hidden in the data matrix. We also present some real-world datasets reordered by our algorithm and discuss the patterns that it uncovers

Abstract: This work deals with mathematical modeling applied to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Mathematical aspects analysis is presented, discussed and reviewed. A new model based on the Fractional Calculus theory is proposed. Parameter estimations are made via two computational strategies to both classical and fractional models aiming to investigate the effects of Caputo fractional derivative. The real data are from HIV patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy in different immune responses. From a quality analysis proposal based on the intraclass correlation coefficient and mean absolute percentage error, combined with the numerical simulations, it was shown that the adopted methodology is a promising tool in the understanding of the HIV/T-CD4+ interaction
