Abstract: The linguistic status of Libras(Brazilian Sign Language) has already been recognized and, from a socio-anthropological view of Deafness, some studies have distanced the Deaf from the pathological conceptions based on hearing impairment and inserted them in discussions about education in contexts of minorities. However, there is still great resistance to viewing the Deaf as bilingual, especially when they do not have the expected proficiency in the prevailing language of the country or in a conventional sign language. This resistance is enhanced if they communicate through homesign languages. The aim of this article, based on a qualitative research of ethnographic nature, inserted in the field of Applied Linguistics,is to discuss the curtailment of the use of homesign languages in bi/multilingual education of the Deaf in the representations that are part of the discourse of the Deaf individuals' relatives, the hearing professionals and the Deafand hearing trainees attending a special support program for public school Deaf students. The analysis of the participants' representation sindicates that there is a misrepresentation of family communication, homesign languages being described as a restricted linguistic system, harmful to the learning of already established languages (in this case, Portuguese and Libras) and a threat to the inclusion of the Deaf in their different communities or in the different groups they take part in. We believe that these representations are based on a static concept of language that disregard the linguistic and cultural diversity of Deafness, ignore the difficulty in communication between the hearing family members and their Deaf children, as well as reinforce the marginalization of the Deaf within the school and within the communities/groups they belong to

Abstract: This work reports the architecture, design, verification and prototyping of a 100 Gbit/s AES-GCM cryptography engine specifically conceived for securing optical transport network (OTN) systems. The proposed solution addresses the main systemic issues related to the use of a block cipher in an OTN system, such as the need for data packetization, the transport of cryptographic auxiliary information, the hitless cipher key change mechanism, and others. The implemented functional logic block (IP core) interfaces with other OTN processing blocks with a 640-bit data path running at 180 MHz. The design was successfully verified by simulations based on regular test benches and the encryption algorithm was validated against standardized test vectors. The full engine was integrated into an 8-million gate 40 nm OTN Processor ASSP developed by CPQD for the Brazilian telecom industry. Chip and ASSP design metrics are also presented. The overall concept and design ideas can contribute to other works related to both OTN and cryptography technology

We present a refination method based on a cyclic cellular automaton (CCA) that simulates a crystallization-like process, aided with a heuristic evolutionary method called differential evolution (DE) used to perform an ordered search of full photonic band gaps (FPBGs) in a 2D photonic crystal (PC). The solution is proposed as a combinatorial optimization of the elements in a binary array. These elements represent the existence or absence of a dielectric material surrounded by air, thus representing a general geometry whose search space is defined by the number of elements in such array. A block-iterative frequency-domain method was used to compute the FPBGs on a PC, when present. DE has proved to be useful in combinatorial problems and we also present an implementation feature that takes advantage of the periodic nature of PCs to enhance the convergence of this algorithm. Finally, we used this methodology to find a PC structure with a 19% bandgap-to-midgap ratio without requiring previous information of suboptimal configurations and we made a statistical study of how it is affected by disorder in the borders of the structure compared with a previous work that uses a genetic algorithm

Abstract: Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) combined with visual stimulation in functional experiments allows the non-invasive dynamic study of brain energy metabolism. 31P-MRS has been applied to several diseases and to healthy subjects, but works have shown variable findings and non-reproducible results, possibly caused by low numbers of subjects combined with different stimulation paradigms. In the present work, we used 31P-MRS at 3 T with two different visual stimulation protocols with different block duration ("short" and "long") to evaluate metabolic changes under different workloads in 38 healthy subjects. We found a 15 % (short protocol—blocks of 1.5 min stimulation) and 3 % (long protocol—blocks of 5 min stimulation) increase in the inorganic phosphate (Pi) to a-adenosine triphosphate (a-ATP) ratio, and a 5 % (short protocol) and 2 % (long protocol) decrease in the nicotinamide adenine nucleotide (NADH + NAD+) to a-ATP ratio. The NADH + NAD+ results are, to the best of our knowledge, the first functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy in vivo assessment of these compounds, but their interpretation is difficult since they cannot be separately quantified at 3 T. Our results show that longer stimulations produce smaller concentration changes in Pi/a-ATP and (NADH + NAD+)/a-ATP ratios, which suggests a possible adaptation effect during longer stimulations that leads metabolic concentrations towards the initial equilibrium

Abstract: This paper reports the implementation of 5G New Radio (5G-NR) optical fronthauls based on radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology and optical carrier-suppressed double sideband (CSDSB) technique, operating at 60 GHz. Experimental results over 20-km fiber-optics links demonstrate the successful transmission of QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulated signals with up to 400-MHz bandwidth. The proposed 5G-NR RoF system performance meets the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) requirements, achieving a total throughput of 800 Mbps

In this paper, a bivariate kappa-mu model is presented. Exact expressions for the 1) joint probability density function, the 2) joint cumulative distribution function, 3) joint arbitrary moments, and the 4) normalized envelope correlation coefficient are derived. The joint statistics are given in terms of their respective parameters (kappa(1), mu(1)) and (kappa(2), mu(2)), with mu(1) = mu(2) = mu > 0 and arbitrary kappa(1) > 0 and kappa(2) > 0. The parameter describing the correlation between kappa-mu fading channels is then written in terms of the physical instances known to affect it in a wireless medium, namely, Doppler shift, the separation distance between two reception points, frequency, and delay spread. As an application example, the outage probability of a dual-branch selection-combining scheme is presented. The effect of correlation in the various aspects of system performance is then investigated. The validity of the analytical results is supported by reducing them to particular cases, for which results are available in the literature, and by means of simulation for the general cases

Abstract: The branch and bound (BB) algorithm is widely used to obtain the global solution of mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems. On the other hand, when the traditional BB structure is directly used to solve nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems, it becomes ineffective, mainly due to the nonlinearity and nonconvexity of the feasible region of the problem. This article presents the difficulties and ineffectiveness of the direct use of the traditional BB algorithm for solving nonconvex MINLP problems and proposes the formulation of an efficient BB algorithm for solving this category of problems. The algorithm is formulated taking into account particular aspects of nonconvex MINLP problems, including (i) how to deal with the nonlinear programming (NLP) subproblems, (ii) how to detect the infeasibility of an NLP subproblem, (iii) how to treat the nonconvexity of the problem, and (iv) how to define the fathoming rules. The proposed BB algorithm is used to solve the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) problem, a classical problem in power systems optimization, and its performance is compared with the performances of off-the-shelf optimization solvers for MINLP problems. The results obtained for four test systems, with different degrees of complexity, indicate that the proposed BB algorithm is effective for solving the TNEP problem with and without considering losses, showing equal or better performance than off-the-shelf optimization solvers

The problem of maximizing a sum of concave–convex ratios over a convex set is addressed. The projection of the problem onto the image space of the functions that describe the ratios leads to the equivalent problem of maximizing a sum of elementary ratios subject to a linear semi-infinite inequality constraint. A global optimization algorithm that integrates a branch-and-bound procedure for dealing with nonconcavities in the image space and an efficient relaxation procedure for handling the semi-infinite constraint is proposed and illustrated through numerical examples. Comparative (computational) analyses between the proposed algorithm and two alternative algorithms for solving sum-of-ratios problems are also presented

Abstract: The presence of physiological artifacts in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is common and detrimental to experimental or clinical analysis. This paper presents a case study where we develop an algorithm based on stochastic filtering to remove blinking artifacts. For this case study, the dynamic system was defined by combining two autoregressive models, the first one represents the EEG signal, and the second one represents the blinking artifact. Some applications use stochastic methods to remove artifacts, so in this paper we apply the stochastic filtering via Kalman filter, that makes possible to remove blinking artifacts from single-channel EEG recordings, as long as the electrooculogram (EOG) signal was available. The method applies to a case study with actual artifacts and simulated artifacts for comparison. The measure of performance utilized is the estimated power spectral density (PSD). The results show that the proposed method could remove blinking artifacts without introducing significant distortions in the EEG signal

In this paper a closed-loop interrogation technique for multi-point temperature measurement using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) is presented. The technique uses a broadband light source and n tunable FBGs to interrogate an array of n FBGs sensors placed along the optical fiber. Each center wavelength of the tunable FBGs is matched with the center wavelength of one FBG sensor placed in the array. The light source directly illuminates the sensor array, so that all the light reflected from the FBGs enters in the optical circuit through an optical circulator and the reflected spectrum of each sensing FBG illuminates a matched tunable FBG. Because the current generated by the photodiode is proportional to the convolution between the two FBGs profiles (the sensor FBG and the tunable FBG), by controlling the value of the convolution at a fixed value, the center wavelengths of the two FBGs are kept spaced by a constant value. Therefore, the temperature of the FBG sensor can be associated with the temperature of the tunable FBG. A two channel prototype was constructed to validate the technique and a very high resolution of +/- 0.001 degrees C was obtained

We present a CMOS low-dropout voltage regulator with a high-speed NMOS compact driver suitable for supplying on-chip voltages for the digital core of a SoC. The LDO is part of a power management controller hardblock integrated within a microcontroller. The die area of the circuit implemented in a 90 nm CMOS process is only 0.054 mm(2). Experimental results show that the developed LDO can supply up to 15 mA and it presents a very fast transient response, with a settling time of approximately 30 ns and a voltage drop of 200 mV when the load current changes from 100 nA to 9 mA

This paper presents a relay model based on a manufactured differential transformer relay, SEL-787, developed in a real-time digital simulator. The objective of this study was to develop the model and to compare its performance to the actual relay and to a generic built-in model. With the proposed model, it is possible to implement studies in real-time simulators not only with the physical relay under analysis, but also with the surrounding protection system. The use of many relays for a real-time simulation test can be very expensive and complex. This paper presents the possibility of using models, based on actual relays, in the surrounding areas to cover all possible protection problems. The proposed model presents a new modeling technique and the comparisons to the relay itself and to the built-in generic model were made not only in terms of algorithms but also in terms of response time. The model’s performance was studied for different situations that interfere with the relay daily operation and it presented good adherence to the actual relay. This could not be observed in the built-in real-time simulator model

Abstract: Mechanical stress compromise the performance and structural integrity of Integrated Circuits (ICs). Stress-sensing devices are becoming important tools to detect and correct stress related problems, improving the performance and yield of ICs. This works introduces a new Eight Terminals Silicon Piezotransducer (8TSP) fabricated using a commercial CMOS process, designed to measure the stress state on the (100) silicon surface. Each sensor integrates a resistor rosette in a single octagonal plate, and the complete stress state can be estimated by the relation between the resistance change in different directions, since the change of resistivity in silicon can be related to mechanical stress by the piezoresistive effect. In order to characterize the device, a four-point-bending apparatus using a circular substrate was designed to have control of both magnitude and direction of the applied uniaxial stress. The device was attached to a disk and stress was applied in the main crystallographic directions to observe the piezoresistance characteristics and calibrate the sensor. We applied stress in some other directions and the stress behavior fit the predicted by the theory. Those results confirm that the 8TPS can be used to find the stress state over the surface of a silicon chip

Abstract: This paper presents the design of a compact-integrated reconfigurable rectenna array containing 2x2 compact microstrip patch antennas based on a fractal model with the rectifier circuit integrated into the same physical structure and usable in practical conditions. In this array configuration, four rectennas were mounted in a planar structure with total dimensions of 85x85 mm using FR-4 dielectric and with reconfigurable DC output that was tested in three ways: series-association, parallel-association and series-parallel association. In the series-association the rectenna array was able to generate the DC power that reached 6.51 V and maximum efficiency of 64.5%; in the parallel-association it generated the DC power that reached 1.58 V and maximum efficiency of 65.3%; in series-parallel-association it generated the DC power that reached 3.00 V and maximum efficiency of 64.5%. The results showed that rectennas in array configuration are feasible to be used as power supplies to electronic devices in real situations

Photovoltaic (PV) energy stands out due to the sustainability aspect, being the target of research investments. At University of Campinas, the sustainable campus project carried out the installation of PV plants at the university with the challenge of conducting research in the Campinas-Brazil region. In this way, the present paper simulated the largest PV plant of University of Campinas (336.96 kWp) in different PV power simulation software, aiming to have data for future comparisons with the installed PV system. For this, is it used PVsyst, PV*SOL, and HOMER for simulations, and then compared the result with the months containing the results of power generation for the installed PV plant. As a result, the three software performed well, with generation close to the installed PV plant. It was noticed HOMER optimism, PV*SOL conservatism and a more accurate result for PVsyst. Therefore, the PV plant worked as designed and the peculiarities of the three software were presented as a contribution of the paper

Resumo

Abstract: This work studies the application of non-MSE criteria to adapt the linear readout of Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs) in the context of communication channel equalization. A qualitative and experimental analysis is performed, in terms of bit error rate, optimization surface and decision boundary. The results reached by the ELM-based equalizer, considering three different noise models, did not reveal clear advantages of using criteria based on the concepts of error entropy, correntropy, and the L 1 -norm of the error. Notwithstanding, the observed results motivate a theoretical investigation on the conditions under which the potential discrepancies between the optimal solutions of these criteria may be stressed

These architectures are compared based on a set of cognitive functions supposed to exist in the human cognitive cycle, and how each architecture deals with them. The comparison emphasizes similarities and differences among the architectures, with the purpose to advise a potential user how to identify the best architecture to employ, depending on the situation

Attribute filters and extinction filters are connected filters used to simplify greyscale images. The first kind is widely explored in the image processing literature, while the second is not much explored yet. Both kind of filters can be efficiently implemented on the max-tree. In this work, we compare these filters in terms of processing time, simplification of flat zones and reduction of max-tree nodes. We also compare their influence as a pre-processing step before extracting affine regions used in matching and pattern recognition. We perform repeatability tests using extinction filters and attribute filters, set to preserve the same number of extrema, as a pre-processing step before detecting Hessian-Affine and Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) affine regions. The results indicate that using extinction filters as pre-processing obtain a significantly higher (more than 5% on average) number of correspondences on the repeatability tests than the attribute filters. The results in processing natural images show that preserving 5% of images extrema using extinction filters achieve on average 95% of the number of correspondences compared to applying the affine region detectors directly to the unfiltered images, and the average number of max-tree nodes is reduced by a factor greater than 3. Therefore, we can conclude that extinction filters are better than attribute filters with respect to preserving the number of correspondences found by affine detectors, while simplifying the max-tree structure. The use of extinction filters as a pre-processing step is recommended to accelerate image recognition tasks

This paper presents the k-Optimum Path Forest (k-OPF) supervised classifier, which is a natural extension of the OPF classifier. k-OPF is compared to the k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree (DT) classifiers, and we see that k-OPF and k-NN have many similarities. This work shows that the k-OPF is equivalent to the k-NN classifier when all training samples are used as prototypes. Simulations comparing the accuracy results, the decision boundaries and the processing time of the classifiers are presented to experimentally validate our hypothesis. Also, we prove that OPF using the max cost function and the NN supervised classifiers have the same theoretical error bounds
