Abstract: Shortly after midnight on 05 June 2016, in the city of Campinas with > 1.2 million inhabitants, located in the State of São Paulo, intense precipitation, including hail, a large number of electric discharges and very strong wind gusts, causing significant damage, were recorded. No fatalities were documented, probably due to the day and time (Sunday around 00:20 Local Time). The affected areas are middle and even upper-middle class neighborhoods, with solid buildings, confirming the potency of the phenomenon. The destruction pattern indicates an intense perturbation resulting in the twisting of structures and tree branches, as well as large objects having been airborne over a distance of about 50 m, and large trees ripped from the ground, all suggesting that it was a tornado of category EF2-3. Severe damage was also reported from other towns in the region. About three hours before the tornado occurred in Campinas, an even stronger event devastated part of the small town of Jarinu, 40 km southeast of Campinas, possibly an EF3 tornado, which caused one fatality and overturned two semi-trailer trucks. No alerts that a disturbance of this magnitude would impact the region were raised, demonstrating that Campinas, and probably most other Brazilian cities and towns, are not prepared for such an event.

During the beginning of June 2016, the synoptic situation over Brazil was characterized by a strong anticyclone centered over the northern half of South America at the 250 hPa level and bounded by a strong zonal Subtropical Jet (STJ) in the south, resulting in moist air being advected from the Amazon and Pacific region, creating favorable conditions for strong convection in the State of São Paulo, even during the night.

Images from a Doppler S-band radar, located in Bauru, recorded a supercell storm lasting 8.5 hours, which traversed the eastern half of the State of São Paulo during the night of 04/05 June 2016 and spawned a tornado in the city of Campinas during the early hours of the morning (Local Time). Despite the distance of > 200 km, these radar observations confirmed typical tornado signatures, such as a rotational damage pattern, a hook echo and a mesocyclone with a rotational velocity of 12.5 m s-1. The supercell was accompanied by intense lightning activity throughout its life cycle with a "lightning jump" from 0 to 55 ground strokes per minute within 12 min just prior to the tornado touch-down, culminating in a frequency of 238 strokes per minute of Total Lightning. Although some of the Severe Storm Parameters calculated by the TITAN (Thunderstorm Identification, Tracking, Analysis and Nowcasting) Software were slightly lower than found in previous tornado cases in the State of São Paulo, this is most likely due to the fact that this was the first occurrence of a tornado observed by radar during the dry austral winter season in this region of Brazil, as well as a nocturnal event.

Abstract: On February 15, 2022, the city of Petrópolis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, received an unusually high volume of rain within three hours (258 mm). It resulted in flash floods and subsequent landslides that caused 231 fatalities, the deadliest landslide disaster recorded in Petrópolis. In this paper, we analyzed the root cause and the key triggering factors of this landslide disaster by assessing the spatial relationship of landslide occurrence with various environmental factors. Rainfall data were retrieved from 1977 to 2022, while other remote sensing data from 1985 to 2020, were utilized to map the landslide scars, soil moisture, terrain attributes, line-of-sight displacement (land surface deformation), and urban sprawling .. to. The results showed that the average rainfall for February 2022 was 200 mm, the heaviest recorded in Petrópolis since 1932. From the rainfall spatial distribution, heavy rainfall was also recorded mostly in regions where the landslide occurred. As for terrain, 23 % of slopes between 45–60° had landslide occurrences and east-facing slopes appeared to be the most conducive for landslides as they recorded landslide occurrences of about 9 to 11 %. Regarding the soil moisture, higher variability was found in the lower altitude (842 m) where the residential area is concentrated. From our land deformation assessment, the area is geologically stable, and the landslide occurred only in the thin layer at the surface of the 1,700 buildings found in the region of interest, 1,021 are on the slope between 20 to 45° and about 60 houses were directly affected by the landslides. As such, we conclude that the heavy rainfall was not the only cause responsible for the catastrophic event of February 15, 2022; a combination of unplanned urban growth on slopes between 45–60°, removal of vegetation, and the absence of inspection were also significant elements of this natural disaster

Abstract: Recent events have reinforced the need to implement responsible research assessments to address different inequalities in science (e. g. gender, race, language). Funding agencies have a central role in mitigating or perpetuating inequities and can influence societal priorities and policies. Considering this background, we investigated how six FAs worldwide are addressing EDI in their funding activities. The following aspects were considered: if more types of diversities are being addressed besides gender approaches; if FAs hold specific departments to address EDI issues; if internal guidelines to eliminate EDI-related bias in peer review processes, grants, and projects evaluations we implemented; if FA conducts a systematic evaluation of diversity data; and finally, if FAs makes diversity data available. Our findings indicate that FAs are considering EDI in their activities and advancing in a more intersectional approach to addressing it

Abstract: In current research evaluation models, monitoring and impact evaluation are extended beyond peer-reviewed articles to include Public Communication of Science and Technology activities. Through an online survey, we analyzed the perceptions of relevance and degree of application of the altmetric indicators for the PCST of 51 sampled Brazilian federal universities. Perceptions of relevance and application of altmetrics proved to be an outlier in 26 indicators. 66.7% of respondents said they did not know the relevance of altmetrics for the PCST or considered it not applicable to the field. Regarding the perception of relevance, the indicator "Mentions tracked by altmetrics" received high relevance scores (7 and 9) from 21.5% of respondents. The indicator was also the least applied, with only one university (1.9%) using it. In addition, 45% of respondents reported having no intention of applying it, 41.1% intend to apply it in the long term, and 11.7% in the short term

Abstract: The pre-salt carbonates are heterogeneous in their geomechanical and petrophysical properties, mainly through the direct influence of sedimentary and post-sedimentary processes. Nevertheless, the hydrocarbon accumulations in this complex system are unusual, featuring large volumes of good quality petroleum and a complex and unusual petroleum system that has instigated scientific and engineering development. Thus, based on well logs and tests, laboratory data, and literature correlations, this study aims to establish a relationship between geomechanical properties and fluid flow behavior in the pre-salt carbonate (Barra Velha and Itapema Formation) of the Búzios Field, Santos Basin, Brazil, by comparing geomechanical facies and flow units. The geomechanical properties, such as horizontal stresses, mechanical strength, and elastic parameters, were used to define the k-mean clustering algorithm. The effective porosity and permeability data extracted from the nuclear magnetic resonance were also used to define flow units by the flow zone indicator method. After calibration of these two clusters, the comparison results showed that when rocks have higher production rates, the geomechanical facies indicate rocks that are less strength, more porous, or more fractured, less rigid, and more susceptible to strain. The presence of clays obstructing the connection of pores in the rocks was a determining factor in the decrease in permeability affecting the relationship between the two clusters. The geomechanical facies show rocks with low strength, but the fluid unit indicates rocks with a non-reservoir profile. The Barra Velha formation showed heterogeneous behavior; some wells show non-reservoir facies in the upper part of the formation, and the best flow conditions were identified in the lower part. The Itapema formation exhibited a more homogeneous geomechanical behavior and showed better flow zone indicator values due to its high permeability
