Abstract: Different theoretical and typological approaches to adverbs uncontroversially acknowledge the existence of a subgroup of adverbs descriptively called "sentence adverbs" (SAs). Nonetheless, as Costa (2008) observes, one and the same sentence having a SA to the right of the main verb may be ambiguous in meaning in European Portuguese as the domain of modification of the adverb can either be the propositional content, or one of its constituents. In this paper, I argue against the existence of a (sub)class of adverbs which has been lumped together under the label "SAs". Instead of taking some classes of adverbs in English to
be representatives of SAs cross-linguistically, I bring some syntactic diagnostics which allow one to distinguish (i) adverbs which can take under their scope the propositional content in some contexts and only sentential constituents in others from (ii) adverbs which do not take the propositional content under their scope. I present syntactic tests which can discriminate between "high" adverbs, which I take to be the best terminology to refer to the universal subclass of "SAs", i.e. those located in the highest portion of the structure in the spirit of Cinque (1999), and "low" adverbs, i.e. those occupying lower portions of the clause. The arguments put forward in this study point to the conclusion that the status of an adverb as a SA is only epiphenomenal. That is, those adverbs occupying higher positions in the hierarchy may coincidentally take the sentence under their scope in some cases but not in all the possible cases

Abstract: Adverbs and Functional Heads: a Cross-Linguistic perspective (Cinque 1999)—one of the founding
works of "Syntactic Cartography"—combines some of the developments in Syntactic Theory from the
1980s and 1990s with insightful contributions from Linguistic Typology. This paper has two interrelated
goals. First, it aims to review the fundamental theses of Cinque’s monography of 1999—which are far from
controversial among scholars working in Cartography—; at the same time it provides conceptual support
to them. Secondly, it aims to explore some methodological tools of Syntactic Cartography presented and
discussed by Cinque (1999), namely the so-called precedence-and-transitivity tests—after a brief discussion on
methodology used to recognise the functional categories, namely Jackendoff’s 1972 criterion—and the use
of the hierarchies as tools to detect intra and interlinguistic variation. With regard to this latter issue, the
paper gathers data from Brazilian Portuguese, Canadian English and Colombian Spanish on verb raising.
The discussion of the data not only favours Cinque’s 2017 recent updates of his theoretical approach to the
cartography of the clause but also shows how Cartography offers a natural scenario to a methodological
approach to both micro and macro-variation

Abstract: syndrome (Thyroglobulin-Elevated Negative Iodine Scintigraphy) in differentiated thyroid carcinoma is characterized by reduced expression of sodium-iodine symporter, rising serum thyroglobulin levels (Tg), and negative whole-body [131I]Iodine scans. In such patients, somatostatin receptor imaging with [68Ga]Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT (SSR PET/CT) and [18F]F-FDG PET/CT (FDG PET/CT) can identify metastases. To compare the uptake pattern of SSR PET/CT and FDG PET/CT in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients with TENIS Syndrome under two conditions: elevated (eTSH) and suppressed (sTSH) TSH serum levels. Based on imaging findings in these patients, we intend to identify potential candidates for peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRNT). Fifteen patients with PTC and TENIS Syndrome were prospectively enrolled. All patients underwent both SSR PET/CT and FDG PET/CT with sTSH and eTSH. Images were blindly evaluated for differences in SUVmax values and lesion detectability. The reference standard consisted of neck ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET/CT, biopsy, and follow-up. Three patients were selected for PRRNT due to lesion uptake similar or higher than the liver.RESULTS On a per-patient and on a per-lesion based analysis, sTSH SSR PET/CT detected a greater number of cervical and distant LNs (both p?=?0.0253 on per-patient and p?=?0.0176 and p?=?0.0391 on per-lesion, respectively) when compared to sTSH FDG PET/CT. Likewise, eTSH SSR PET/CT detected a greater number of patients with local recurrences (p?=?0.0455) and distant LN metastases (p?=?0.0143) and in a per-lesion based analysis greater number of cervical and distant LNs (p?=?0.0337 and p?=?0.0039, respectively) when compared to eTSH FDG PET/CT. No differences were found for lung and bone metastases. One of three patients submitted to 3 cycles of PRRNT presented with a visual partial response, a 20% reduction in quantitative analyses and stable disease regarding Tg and TgAb levels.CONCLUSIONS In patients with PTC and TENIS Syndrome, SSR PET/CT detected a greater number of loco-regional and distant LN metastases than FDG PET/CT with both sTSH and eTSH. One of 3 patients submitted to PRRNT presented a partial response to treatment. Our findings may impact in patient restaging, management and theranostics strategies with radiolabeled somatostatin analogs

Abstract: Nerve injuries are debilitating, leading to long-term motor deficits. Remyelination and axonal growth are supported and enhanced by growth factor and cytokines. Combination of nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) with adipose-tissue-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (AdMSCs) has been performing promising strategy for nerve regeneration.Methods: 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL)-NGCs were fabricated. Wistar rats subjected to critical sciatic nerve damage (12-mm gap) were divided into sham, autograft, PCL (empty NGC), and PCL+MSC (NGC multi-functionalized with 106 canine AdMSC embedded in heterologous fibrin biopolymer) groups. In vitro, the cells were characterized and directly stimulated with interferon-gamma to evaluate their neuroregeneration potential. In vivo, the sciatic and tibial functional indices were evaluated for 12 weeks. Gait analysis and nerve conduction velocity were analyzed after 8 and 12 weeks. Morphometric analysis was performed after 8 and 12 weeks following lesion development. Real-time PCR was performed to evaluate the neurotrophic factors BDNF, GDNF, and HGF, and the cytokines IL-6 and IL-10. Immunohistochemical analysis for the p75NTR neurotrophic receptor, S100, and neurofilament was performed with the sciatic nerve.Results: The inflammatory environment in vitro have increased the expression of neurotrophins BDNF, GDNF, HGF, and IL-10 in canine AdMSCs. Nerve guidance conduits multi-functionalized with canine AdMSCs embedded in HFB improved functional motor and electrophysiological recovery compared with PCL group after 12 weeks. However, the results were not significantly different than those obtained using autografts. These findings were associated with a shift in the regeneration process towards the formation of myelinated fibers. Increased immunostaining of BDNF, GDNF, and growth factor receptor p75NTR was associated with the upregulation of BDNF, GDNF, and HGF in the spinal cord of the PCL+MSC group. A trend demonstrating higher reactivity of Schwann cells and axonal branching in the sciatic nerve was observed, and canine AdMSCs were engrafted at 30 days following repair.Conclusions: 3D-printed NGCs multi-functionalized with canine AdMSCs embedded in heterologous fibrin biopolymer as cell scaffold exerted neuroregenerative effects. Our multimodal approach, support the trophic microenvironment, resulting in a pro-regenerative state after critical sciatic nerve injury in rats

Abstract: 6-Nitrodopamine (6-ND) is released from isolated atria of rabbit, rat and mice and has significant positive chronotropic action. The positive chronotropic effect induced by 6-ND is selectively blocked by ß1-adrenoceptor antagonists at concentrations that do not affect the positive chronotropic effect induced by dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. Here the effects of propranolol, 4-NO2-propranolol and 7-NO2-propranolol were investigated in the rat isolated right atrium. The right atrium was mounted between two metal hooks in 10-mL custom designed glass chambers containing Krebs-Henseleit’s solution, continuously gassed (95%O2:5%CO2) and heated (37°C). Tissues were allowed to equilibrate under a resting tension of 10 mN for one hour, and the isometric tension was registered using a PowerLab system. 4-NO2-propranol was more potent than propranolol as a negative chronotropic agent. At 30 nM, 4-NO2-propranolol did not affect the chronotropic effect of dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. The S-isomer of 4- NO2-propranolol, but not the R-isomer, was active. Propranolol induced fall in atrial rate at concentrations higher than those required to block the chronotropic effects of dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline, but enough to block the 6-ND effect. 7-NO2-propranolol was only active at very high concentration, and the effect was not stereoselective. The negative chronotropic effects induced by 4-NO2-propranolol (100 nM) and propranolol (300 nM) were not observed in L-NAME treated atria, whereas that induced by 7-NO2-propranolol (10 mM) was unaffected. The potent and selective inhibition observed with (±)-4-NO2-propranolol reinforces the concept that 6-ND is a major mediator of heart chronotropism and the main target of the so-called b-blockers

Abstract: 6-Nitrodopamine (6-ND) is a novel endogenous catecholamine that is released from the rat isolated vas deferens, and has been characterized as a major modulator of the contractility of rat isolated epididymal vas deferens (RIEVD). Drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants, a1 and ß1ß2 adrenoceptor blockers, act as selective antagonists of the 6-ND receptor in the RIEVD. In the rat isolated atria, 6-ND has a potent positive chronotropic action and causes remarkable potentiation of the positive chronotropic effects induced by dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. Here, whether 6-ND interacts with the classical catecholamines in the rat isolated vas deferens was investigated. Incubation with 6-ND (0.1 and 1 nM; 30min) caused no contractions in the RIEVD but provoked significant leftward shifts in the concentration-response curves to noradrenaline, adrenaline, and dopamine. Pre-incubation of the RIEVD with 6-ND (1 nM), potentiated the contractions induced by electric-field stimulation (EFS), whereas pre-incubation with 1 nM of dopamine, noradrenaline or adrenaline, did not affect EFS-induced contractions. In tetrodotoxin (1 µM) pre-treated (30 min) RIEVD, pre-incubation with 6-ND (0.1 nM) did not cause leftward shifts in the concentration-dependent contractions induced by noradrenaline, adrenaline, or dopamine. Pre-incubation of the RIEVD with the a2A-adrenoceptor antagonist idazoxan (30 min, 10 nM) did not affect dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline, and EFS-induced contractions. However, when idazoxan (10 nM) and 6-ND (0.1 nM) were simultaneously pre-incubated (30 min), a significant potentiation of the EFS-induced contractions of the RIEVD was observed. 6-nitrodopamine causes remarkable potentiation of dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline contractions on the RIEVD, due to activation of adrenergic terminals, possibly via pre-synaptic adrenoceptors

Abstract: Multipotent adult stem cells must balance self-renewal with differentiation into various mature cell types. How this balance is regulated at the transcriptional level is poorly understood. Here we show that a network of basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) transcription factors controls both stemness and bi-potential differentiation in the Drosophila adult intestine. We find that homodimers of Daughterless (Da), homolog of mammalian E proteins, maintain the self-renewal of intestinal stem cells (ISCs), and antagonise the activity of heterodimers of Da and Scute (Sc), homolog of ASCL and a known regulator of intestinal secretory differentiation. The HLH factor Extramacrochaetae (Emc), homologous to Id proteins, promotes absorptive differentiation by titrating Da and Sc to. We further show that Emc prevents the committed absorptive progenitor (the enteroblast, EB) from de-differentiating, underscoring the plasticity of these cells. Switching physical interaction partners in this way enables the active maintenance of stemness while priming stem cells for differentiation along two alternative fates. Such regulatory logic could be recapitulated in other bipotent stem cell systems

Abstract: The deficiency of ADA2 (DADA2) is a rare autoinflammatory disease provoked by mutations in the ADA2 gene inherited in a recessive fashion. Up to this moment there is no consensus for the treatment of DADA2 and anti-TNF is the therapy of choice for chronic management whereas bone marrow transplantation is considered for refractory or severe phenotypes. Data from Brazil is scarce and this multicentric study reports 18 patients with DADA2 from Brazil. Patients and methods: This is a multicentric study proposed by the Center for Rare and Immunological Disorders of the Hospital 9 de Julho - DASA, São Paulo - Brazil. Patients of any age with a confirmed diagnosis of DADA2 were eligible for this project and data on clinical, laboratory, genetics and treatment were collected. Results: Eighteen patients from 10 different centers are reported here. All patients had disease onset at the pediatric age (median of 5 years) and most of them from the state of São Paulo. Vasculopathy with recurrent stroke was the most common phenotype but atypical phenotypes compatible with ALPS-like and Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) was also found. All patients carried pathogenic mutations in the ADA2 gene. Acute management of vasculitis was not satisfactory with steroids in many patients and all those who used anti-TNF had favorable responses. Conclusion: The low number of patients diagnosed with DADA2 in Brazil reinforces the need for disease awareness for this condition. Moreover, the absence of guidelines for diagnosis and management is also necessary to guide diagnosis and treatment of this disorder

Abstract: Energy auctions are increasingly being used to meet the energy needs of many countries.These auctions have been studied extensively, as it is widely agreed that their design elements have a major impact on auction outcomes.These studies analyze the relationship between auction design and outcomes, usually from the perspective of the auction regulator.In our study, we propose to analyze such designs from both the bidder’s and the intermediary’s perspective.As a case study, we describe and analyze the main factors that led a woodchip project to win a public energy auction, with drawbacks in the reference price formula for projects that require inflexible generation, mainly biomass projects.We then propose a more in-depth analysis and optimization of the bid price control formula, arriving at results that point to some weaknesses in the control formula or in its underlying rules

Abstract: Advances in wound treatment depend on the availability of suitable animal models. All animal models try to reflect human wound healing problems. For acute wounds, it is easier to obtain adequate animal models, however, for chronic wounds such as those found in individuals with diabetic foot ulcer, approximations of the clinical picture become a challenge. Nowadays, the key points of wound healing processes are better understood, and therefore, therapeutic strategies can be developed to manipulate wound repair. Research efforts involves the development of therapies to aid in the treatment of impaired wound healing and, to improving normal wound healing to drive a process close to regenerative. To achieve a better animal model that is more appropriate for studying wound healing, six-week- old male C57BL/6 mice were separated into groups fed a Chow and High-Fat Diet for 0.5, 3, and 6 months, when part of the animals were induced to diabetes by streptozotocin. Then, mice were submitted to metabolic, molecular, and morphological analyses. We show that this model results in a severe metabolic phenotype with insulin resistance, reduced insulin expression, and glucose intolerance associated with obesity and, more importantly, skin changes. Furthermore, the skin phenotype, both structurally and transcriptionally, overlapped with conditions found in elderly patients with DM that reproduce the phenotype of most patients who develop diabetic foot ulcers

Resumo: No presente trabalho, caracterizamos o modelo cosmológico de de-Sitter bem como sua representação plana, o chamado Cronotopo de Castelnuovo, através do grupo de Fantappié. No Cronotopo de Castelnuovo, obtemos e resolvemos a equação de Laplace dependente de um parâmetro chamado grau de homogeneidade (Equação de Laplace Generalizada) com simetria radial e discutimos a relação com o Laplaciano Clássico(1). Ao estudarmos esta equação de Laplace com o grau de homogeneidade da função sendo um número inteiro, emerge uma nova classe de polinômios. Para tais polinômios discutimos as chamadas relações de recorrência, função geratriz e a possível conexão com os chamados polinômios clássicos. Finalmente discutimos os casos em que o grau de homogeneidade da função não é um número inteiro

Abstract: Background Yeast research in the context of food/beverage production and industrial biotechnology faces a dilemma: to use real industrial media or to use fully defined laboratory media? While the former option might lead to experiments closer to industrial conditions, the latter has the advantage of allowing for reproducibility and comparability of results among different laboratories, as well as being suitable for the investigation of how different individual components affect microbial or process performance. It is undoubtable that the development of a synthetic must a few decades ago led to important advances in wine yeast research. Results We developed a fully defined medium that mimics sugarcane molasses, a frequently used medium in different industrial processes where yeast is cultivated. The medium, named 2SMol, builds upon a previously published semi-defined formulation and is conveniently prepared from some stock solutions: C-source, organic N, inorganic N, organic acids, trace elements, vitamins, Mg+K, and Ca. We validated the 2SMol recipe in a scaled-down sugarcane biorefinery model, comparing the performance of different yeast strains in different real molasses-based media. We also showcase the flexibility of the medium by investigating the effect of nitrogen availability on the ethanol yield during fermentation. Conclusions Here we present in detail the development of a fully defined synthetic molasses medium, and we hope the 2SMol formulation will be valuable to researchers both in academia and industry to obtain new insights and developments in industrial yeast biotechnology

Abstract: We prove, for non-null electromagnetic fields and for their respective free cases, that Maxwell and Dirac equations are equivalent. Our proof is based on the use of Rainich-Misner-Wheeler theorem and on general assumptions which are indeed satisfied for the case under consideration. This equivalence is discussed in terms of relationship between a non-linear Dirac-like equation (with is a spinorial representation of Maxwell equation) and Dirac equation. This relationship is interpreted by means of a Riemann-Cartan-Weyl geometry which is metric compatible and with the trace of the torsion 1-form playing the role of the Weyl 1-form. We also discuss the relationship between Maxwell and Dirac fields in the light of the above resuts. All calculations are performed in terms of the Clifford algebra of spacetime, the so-called spacetime algebra

Abstract: This technical report presents preliminary results of the museum research scenario developed during the second year of the Socioenactive Systems project. In this report, we first briefly introduce the research scenario, then, we present an overview of our first workshop conducted at the Exploratory Science Museum of Unicamp, in which we exhibited three interactive artworks to be freely explored by participants, who afterwards were invited to build a technological artifact for themselves. Next, we show the preliminary results from the workshop, which include a qualitative analysis of recorded interactions with the three artifacts exhibited and an evaluation of the workshop itself. While the workshop was well evaluated by the participants, the qualitative analysis, in turn, suggests promising socioenactive qualities to be found in the exhibited artifacts, contributing in both theory and practice to the Socioenactive Systems project. We end the report with our concluding remarks and the next steps for the following year

We give sufficient conditions on A, and B; for the application of the method and present results for a discretization of the heat equation

Abstract: Synthetic cannabinoids are still a growing trend among drug users and consist of a group of hundreds of highly potent compounds. To investigate the use of such substances, sample preparation of biological matrices is a crucial step prior to instrumental analysis. Although different efficient extraction techniques have been proposed for that aim, they usually do not fit eco-friendly guidelines that have been gaining popularity in recent years, such as Green Analytical Toxicology. This work uses describes for the first time the use of switchable hydrophilicity solvent-based homogenous liquid-liquid microextraction (SHS-HLLME) for synthetic cannabinoids. This is a green technique that replaces highly toxic organic reagents for switchable hydrophilicity solvents (SHS), substances that can be either water-miscible or immiscible depending on their protonation. Thus, by simply adjusting the pH of the system, these SHS can be used as extraction solvents. A full optimization study including type of SHS, volume of protonated SHS, volume of NaOH, salting-out effect, and extraction time was perfomed. The optimized procedure consisted of precipitating the proteins of 300 ?L of plasma with 300 ?L of acetonitrile followed by centrifugation; evaporation of the organic solvent under N2 stream; addition of 500 ?L of the protonated DPA, DPA-HCl (6 M) (1:1, v/v); addition of 500 ?L of NaOH (10 M); and finally centrifugation and evaporation. Validation results showed determination coefficients ? 0.99 for the 0.1-10 ng/mL linear range; 0.01-0.08 ng/mL as limit of detection; 0.1 ng/mL as limit of quantitation; accuracy and imprecision were within acceptable ranges; matrix effect, recovery, and process efficiency ranged from -55.6% to 185.9%, 36% to 56.7%, and 18.5% to 148.4%, respectively. The SHS-HLLME herein described was fully optimized providing satisfactory recoveries of 31 synthetic cannabinoids at low concentrations requiring only 300 ?L of plasma. In addition, the validation results showed that the technique is a reliable eco-friendly alternative for clinical and toxicological analysis

Abstract: In recent papers ([25], [26]) a package for solving large-scale nonlinear systems of equations has been described. This package, called NIGHTINGALE in the present work, includes Newton's method and several quasi-Newton methods. In the first paper cited a globalization strategy based on line searches is given. In this paper we restrict our analysis to the quasi-Newton methods that exhibited best behavior, based on Broyden's formula and on the Column-Updating formula, respectively. We introduce a new globalization procedure based on trust regions and a new tolerant strategy that allows us to perform "global iterations" only when they are necessary. Abstract: In this paper, using the theory of inverse integrating factor, we provide a new simple proof for the Lum-Chua’s conjecture, which says that a continuous planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has at most one limit cycle. In addition, we prove that if this limit cycle exists, then it is hyperbolic and its stability is characterized in terms of the parameters. To the best of our knowledge, the hyperbolicity of the limit cycle has not been pointed out before

Abstract: Obesity-related type II diabetes (diabesity) has increased global morbidity and mortality dramatically. Previously, the ancient drug salicylate demonstrated promise for the treatment of type II diabetes, but its clinical use was precluded due to high dose requirements. In this study, we present a nitroalkene derivative of salicylate, 5-(2-nitroethenyl)salicylic acid (SANA), a molecule with unprecedented beneficial effects in diet-induced obesity (DIO). SANA reduces DIO, liver steatosis and insulin resistance at doses up to 40 times lower than salicylate. Mechanistically, SANA stimulated mitochondrial respiration and increased creatine-dependent energy expenditure in adipose tissue. Indeed, depletion of creatine resulted in the loss of SANA action. Moreover, we found that SANA binds to creatine kinases CKMT1/2, and downregulation CKMT1 interferes with the effect of SANA in vivo. Together, these data demonstrate that SANA is a first-in-class activator of creatine-dependent energy expenditure and thermogenesis in adipose tissue and emerges as a candidate for the treatment of diabesity

Abstract: Soybean is one of the most important sources of protein and vegetable oil in the world. Given its increasing demand, the increment in yield has only been possible due to investments in research and production technology, especially in breeding programs. One of the main factors influencing soybean yield is the seed morphology; however, its analyses are hampered by the lack of efficient computational approaches with not only accurate results, but also a high flexibility to user preferences and needs. In this context, the present work provides a methodological framework for: (i) seed segmentation in soybean images; (ii) seed morphological evaluation; and (iii) image-based prediction of the hundred-seed weight trait. We used genotypes from a partial diallel cross design, which aimed at obtaining genotypes with high agronomic performance. In addition to the measurement of the hundred-seed weight, we collected RGB images of seeds of each plot. For image segmentation, we created an in-house image processing pipeline, which enabled a full morphological seed evaluation. For predicting the hundred-seed weight, we compared different machine learning algorithms using as input the morphological characteristics obtained, and also features from state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures. The image segmentation methodology showed to be highly efficient, as more than 98% of the seeds in the images were correctly identified. Even if the seeds were close, the segmentation strategy could separate them into independent image components. In addition to supplying a highly accurate decision support system for soybean breeders, we verified the morphological phenotyping adaptability in other plant species, fully assessing the pipeline generalization. We consider the use of this methodology highly advantageous, as the method is entirely based on widely used morphological operations, which results in an easy implementation and low computational costs. Using these morphological measures, we could estimate machine learning models for predicting the hundred-seed weight, achieving considerable predictive accuracy. The same results were observed for CNN-obtained features, showing the efficiency of the morphological measurements as feature extractors. The possibility of obtaining seed morphological characteristics provides a valuable tool for the continuous and efficient development of new soybean cultivars in breeding programs aimed at long-term genetic gain. Additionally, through a faster seed image acquisition workflow, with less chance of errors and low cost, it is also possible to make predictions of important soybean characteristics. The work conducted has the potential to help future research and the industry to develop automated phenotyping tools, incorporating the proposed analytical workflows

Abstract: Tetrapods (amphibian, reptiles, birds and mammals) have become a central model system for global ecology, conservation, and biodiversity science at large. But continuing data gaps, limited data standardisation, and ongoing flux in taxonomic nomenclature constrain integrative research on this group and potentially cause biased inference. We combined and harmonised taxonomic, spatial, phylogenetic, and attribute data with phylogeny-based imputation to provide a comprehensive data resource (TetrapodTraits) that includes values, predictions, and sources for 75 attributes. These attributes include body size, activity time, micro- and macrohabitat, geography, environmental preferences, human influence and threat status, for all 33,281 tetrapod species covered in recent fully sampled phylogenies. We assess gaps and biases across taxa and space, finding that shared data missing in attribute values increased with taxon-level completeness and richness across clades. Prediction of missing attribute values using multiple assessment methods revealed substantial changes in estimated macroecological patterns. These results highlight particular biases incurred by non-random missingness and mechanisms to best address it. While there is an obvious need for further data collection and updates, our phylogeny- -informed database of tetrapod traits can support a better representation of undersampled species and their attributes in ecology, evolution, and conservation
