Resumo: A tese investiga como as imagens (em especial a fotografia) são incorporadas em três romances latino-americanos contemporâneos: Los planetas (1999), de Sergio Chejfec, História natural da ditadura (2006), de Teixeira Coelho, e Arquivo das crianças perdidas (2019), de Valeria Luiselli. A pesquisa parte da pergunta "o que dizem as imagens?" para examinar os diferentes modos como esses autores articulam texto e imagem na construção de narrativas que problematizam as fronteiras entre documento e ficção, memória e história. A metodologia adota uma abordagem comparativa e ensaística, de viés benjaminiano. A análise se desenvolve através de uma escuta atenta das imagens em cada obra, buscando compreender não apenas seus significados imediatos, mas principalmente suas reverberações e efeitos na economia narrativa dos romances. O arcabouço teórico articula diferentes perspectivas sobre a imagem, com destaque para as contribuições de Walter Benjamin, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Rancière e Raúl Antelo. A pesquisa dialoga também com teorias específicas sobre fotografia e literatura, como as elaboradas por Philippe Dubois e François Soulages. A análise revela três eixos principais de operação das imagens nos romances estudados: 1) as tensões entre determinação e indeterminação; 2) a dupla temporalidade que instauram nas narrativas; e 3) as diferentes estratégias de écfrase empregadas pelos autores. A tese demonstra como, em cada obra, as fotografias funcionam não apenas como elementos ilustrativos ou documentais, mas como operadores ativos que contribuem para desestabilizar noções fixas de tempo, espaço e identidade. Abstract: This thesis investigates how images (especially photography) are incorporated into three contemporary Latin American novels: Los planetas (1999) by Sergio Chejfec, História natural da ditadura (2006) by Teixeira Coelho, and Lost Children Archive (2019) by Valeria Luiselli. The research stems from the question "what do images say?" to examine the different ways these authors articulate text and image in constructing narratives that problematize the boundaries between document and fiction, memory and history. The methodology adopts a comparative and essayistic approach, from a Benjaminian perspective. The analysis develops through attentive listening to the images in each work, seeking to understand not only their immediate meanings but primarily their reverberations and effects on the narrative economy of the novels. The theoretical framework articulates different perspectives on image, highlighting the contributions of Walter Benjamin, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jacques Rancière, and Raúl Antelo. The research also dialogues with specific theories about photography and literature, such as those developed by Philippe Dubois and François Soulages. The analysis reveals three main operational axes of images in the novels studied: 1) the tensions between determination and indetermination; 2) the double temporality they establish in the narratives; and 3) the different ekphrastic strategies employed by the authors. The dissertation demonstrates how, in each work, photographs function not only as illustrative or documentary elements but as active operators that contribute to destabilizing fixed notions of time, space, and identity.
