Title: Hetero- And Homocoagulation Of Colloidal Gold And Iron Oxides

Abstract: The mutual coagulation of colloidal gold and iron oxides (goethite and hematite) was studied. The behavior of the mixed systems was observed by TEM. In 0.1 M sodium nitrate solution homocoagulation of the gold particles is observed, instead of the heterocoagulation observed in diluted electrolyte solutions. Peptization experiments with the colloidal gold/goethite heterocoagulated system show that electrostatic forces are dominant. The behavior of the mixed system at different temperatures is used to estimate the heat of adhesion. The HHF potentials of both systems are also calculated; both HHF and the Langmuir heat obtained are consistent. © 1992.
