|Abstract:||In this work we report a luminescence study of 5,6-diazaphenanthrene dissolved in n-hexane and hexafluoroisopropanol with the excitation energies focused in the singlet and triplet manifolds of this molecule. Fluorescence spectra indicate that the lowest excited singlet state is changed from 1(nπ*) in n-hexane to 1(ππ*) in hexafluoroisopropanol at room temperature and low temperatures. The phosphorescence obtained on direct laser excitation of the triplet state is assigned as the 3A1(ππ*) → S0) process for both solutions. The temperature dependence of the luminescence and the relative yields of the T1 → S0 emissions allow us to conclude that the non-phosphorescence of 5,6-diazaphenanthrene in hydrocarbon solvents is determined by the low population of the triplet state. © 1988.|
