Abstract: In two groups of 22 patients lorazepam 20 mg and diazepam 10 mg were administered orally on the night before operation. Thirty minutes before anesthesia both groups received, in a double-blind method, lorazepam (0.02 mg/kg) or diazepam (10 mg) intravenously. The evaluation done the next day showed that: lorazepam has an important tranquilizing effect, although not statistically different from diazepam. Lorazepam is effective in producing amnesia, significantly more than diazepam. Lorazepam has no important actions on vital parameters.
