Abstract: Aim. The significant loss of flexibility and muscular strength as a result of the aging process is well established in the literature. The effects of resistance training (RT) for increasing muscle strength is consensus, however, its influence on flexibility is still divergent. The objective this study was to investigate the effects on the flexibility and muscle strength in postmenopausal women after 32 weeks of RT. Methods. There participated 14 postmenopausal women (>12 months amenorrhea), physically inactive volunteers. The flexibility assessment was performed using a fleximeter for four joints of the body (shoulder, knee, trunk and hip), and the muscle strength was assessed using the 1 maximal repetition. The RT program lasted 32 weeks, with a weekly frequency of 3 alternate days, during 60 minutes/session, and a prescription consisting of repeated exercises in the target area with 'weekly weight adjustments. Results. Improvement of the body composition, significant increase of the muscle strength, improvement of flexibility in the right and left shoulder joints and the right hip, and a significant reduction of trunk flexibility. Conclusion. The increase of the muscle activity as a result of the completion of the RT program furthered the muscle strength and flexibility increase of hip and shoulder in postmenopausal women.
