Title: Zone Melting Of Binary Alloys With Compositions Near An Eutectic Or Peritectic

Abstract: The concentration profiles after zone melting of binary alloys are calculated. If the phase diagram contains peritectic or eutectic alloys, under certain conditions, regions with two-phase solidification are formed (pseudo-eutectic, pseudo-peritectic). To be able to include deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium in the molten zone, the theory of Burton, Prim, and Slichter is generalized to higher solute contents. It turns out that the formation of two-phase regions is improved by these non-equilibrium effects. Under certain conditions they are even formed in normal freezing. © 1976 Springer-Verlag.
