Abstract: Kasteleijn and Kranendonk studied a ferromagnetic system of spins 1/2 in a second-order approximation for the density matrix which they called constant-coupling approximation. In a first-order approximation, however, they were able to get the same results as those obtained with the molecular-field approximation for spin 1/2. Their first-order approximation is here modified and extended to a similar system of spins 1. This is a nontrivial modification since it is necessary to include a special «thermodynamic variable» in order to parametrize the partition function of the system. The results obtained in this first-order approximation for the density matrix, which is a sort of extension of the Bragg-Williams method for dealing with the S=1 case, are shown to be the same as those given by the ad hoc molecular-field approximation. Since the above-mentioned procedure is derived from basic principles of statistical mechanics, its results give a deeper insight into the meaning of the molecular-field approximation. © 1975 Società Italiana di Fisica.
