|Abstract:||Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) is a syntetic progestogen with high efficacy contraceptive. A descriptive clinical study was carried out with 1401 women who chose contraception through use of 150 mg of MPA trimestral, enrolled at the Family Planning Clinic, Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, UNICAMP, from september 1976 through september 1990. Body weight and blood pressure was measured each three months. A statistically significant increase in body weight was observed, related to time of the use and initial weight. Regarding blood pressure, effects were minimal but clinically favourable. These results showed that with appropriate selection and orientation of users, MPA can be one more contraceptive option available to many women.|
