Title: Identification Of Flow Regime Transitions In Fluidized Beds Of Large Particles By Pressure Drop Fluctuation Measurements

Abstract: This experimental work is concerned with the identification of fluidization regimes of large solid particles (group D of Geldart's classification). The parameters analyzed in this study were particle properties (ρp, dp, φ) and bed geometries (Dc, Ho·). The transition velocities of different regimes were determined by visual observation and measurements of pressure drop fluctuations and average local porosity. Three flow regimes were identified between minimum fluidization velocity and transport velocity: slugging, apparent slugging and turbulent. The results show that slugging flow begins at the minimum fluidization, the transition velocities increase with particle properties and the turbulent transition is of the order of 30 to 70% of the free falling terminal velocity. Correlations were proposed to predict the boundaries between the different fluidization regimes.
