Title: Hydrogen Monitoring In Catalytic Cracking Vessel Steels With Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Abstract: Hydrogen in standard catalytic cracking vessel steels (ASTM A285 and ASTM 516) can cause equipment damage in oil refineries. The monitoring of hydrogen and the determination of its diffusion rate are very important for hydrogen-induced damage control and for increasing the lifetime of these standard steels. In this work, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was utilized to investigate hydrogen in ASTM A285 grade C and ASTM 516 grade 70 steels. These steels were hydrogenated in a 0.1 N NaOH solution with a current density of 5 mA/cm2 and an exposed surface of 1 cm2, during 15 min. The hydrogen diffusion coefficients and permeability of those steels were obtained in a measuring double cell by a double-potentiostatic electrochemical method. Thin plates of the specimens were placed between the two halves of the cell, separating the two electrolyte chambers from one another. Each half cell was filled with the same 0.1 N NaOH electrolyte. From the comparative analysis of the impedance data and from the measured values of the diffusion coefficients and permeability by a double-potentiostatic method, it was possible to evaluate the viability of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy usage for hydrogen monitoring in standard catalytic cracking vessel ASTM A285 and ASTM 516 steels.
