Title: Wattle And Daub Construction In Brazil [construções Com Taipa De Mão No Brasil]
Author: Reis Lopes W.G.
Ino A.
Abstract: This paper aims to study the advantages, limitations, design parameters and applicable procedures in house planning and construction using the wattle and daub construction technique. This research comprised specific bibliographical review, professional and institutional contacts with expert people, and local building visiting. The techniques and visual details as well as the materials and procedures were all registered through questionnaires and photographic resources. Based on the obtained data, an orderly survey of the most important Brazilian buildings was done, taking into account the more adequate technical parameters for the wattle and daub technique improvement. From the technical analysis of those selected buildings, the authors found out that the wattle and daub construction technique is feasible for the most different kinds of building. This construction technique may assume an important role in housing design due to its constructing simplicity, the use of nonskill labor, the use of local and renewable construction material, the very good thermal performance and low energy input. These factors must be considered at this moment when there is an increasing concern with ecological balance and life quality improvement.
