Title: Voltage Stability Improvement By Optimizing Reactive Power Reserves

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology that considers voltage stability constrains into the traditional optimal power flow formulation to the short-term operation planning. Two optimization techniques are applied in a real-life Brazilian network: maximization of reactive reserves and minimization of active power losses. These methods are based on the concept that the stability margin has a strong relation with system reactive reserves. The methodology used in this paper changes only the reactive power, preserving the minimum cost solution. The results were satisfactory since it decreased system losses and improved system margin and reactive reserves. In addition, this work presents a contingency analysis to evaluate system performance under faults with this new reactive profile.
