Abstract: We did a systematic review in the national and international literature. Fourteen studies were eligible for selection, to analise the importance of digital rectal examination and PSA levels in prostate cancer diagnosis. More than 60,000 patients were examinated between 1966 and 2003. Most studies included asymptomatic men older than 50 years. The overall detection rate of prostate carcinoma was 17.8%, between patients with an abnormal digital rectal examination and PSA levels more than 4,0 ng/ml. This performed almost 5% of all the patients examinated. The sensitivity was 83.0%, specificity was 94.7%, negative predictive value was 73.0% and positive predictive value of 47.3%. We concluded that digital rectal examination and PSA are important exams to diagnosis prostate cancer.
