|Title:||Effects Of Ultrasound Assisted Extraction Of Water Soluble Constituents On Brazilian Ginseng Roots|
|Abstract:||Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) is an effective technique to recovery analytes from different matrices in shorter time than other extraction techniques. The recognition of the efficiency of dynamic UAE coupled with the additional advantages offered by the use of water as an environmentally friendly solvent has prompted researchers to investigate the potential of UAE for industrial-scale extraction of natural products. Species of the genus Pfaffia (Amaranthaceae) are commercialized in Brazil as substitutes for Panax spp. (ginseng, Araliaceae). Due to the similar morphology of its roots to those of ginseng, they are popularly known as "Brazilian ginseng". Recently, highly chemical constituents used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries have been identified in Brazilian ginseng (Pffafia glomerata) roots. Thus, the effects of dynamic ultrasound assisted extraction of water soluble constituents on Brazilian Ginseng (Pffafia glomerata) roots were evaluated in order to understand how ultrasound interacts with cell walls and enhance mass transfer of the cell contents. The roots were analyzed before and after being subjected to the extraction process by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Thermal (DT) analyses. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
