|Abstract:||Urinary tract infection (UTI) accounts for over five millions medical appointments per year in the United States. The prevalence of UTI is higher in women compared to men in all ages but in boys. The prevalence of bacteriuria in women increase with age, reching 10-15% in the elderly. Recurrent UTI is common in women and has a negative impact in quality of life. Actually new strategies have been developed to prevent UIT and new agents have been introduced in the therapeutic armamentarium, including for prophylaxis. D-manose, recently has proven to be effective in preventing recurrent UTI and is a promising alternative for many patients. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora.Todos os direitos reservados.|
