Title: Contextual Considerations And Brief Analyses About Two Piano Transcriptions By Franz Liszt On Pieces By J. S. Bach Written For Organ Com Pedal Obbligato [considerações Contextuais E Breves Análises Acerca De Duas Transcrições Para Piano De Franz Liszt Sobre Peças De J. S. Bach Escritas Para órgão Con Pedale Obbligato]
Author: Penha G.R.
Abstract: This article discusses the process of rewriting in Franz Liszt's piano transcriptions of J. S. Bach's works originally written for organ with pedal obbligato. Various data are discussed with regard to the historical context in which the transcriptions of these pieces were written in order to examine social, economic, poetic and aesthetic issues involved in this transcription process. A number of technical changes and affective variations implicated in the virtuoso piano writing are also examined in the Liszt transcriptions of the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor (BWV 542) and the Prelude and Fugue in A minor (BWV 543).
