Title: THE EVALUATION OF A SYSTEM FOR GENERATION OF ATMOSPHERES WITH STANDARD CONCENTRATION OF VAPORS FOR USE IN ACUTE TOXICITY STUDIES

Abstract: A system for generating an air stream contaminated with a well defined and constant vapor content of organic liquids is described and evaluated. The air stream containing vapor is produced by passing clean, dry air through a series of thermostated gas dispersion bottles filled with the pure liquid to be evaporated. Tests with substances of very different volatilities show that the air stream leaves the last gas dispersion bottle completely saturated at air flow rates up to 5 1/min. By adjusting adequately the temperature of the saturator it is possible to produce, for many substances, vapor concentrations within the range 10(3) - 10(5) ppm (v/v) with relative error of about 1%. The air flow rate values and toxic levels are adequate for use in inhalation acute toxicity studies.
