Title: Development of Cuban bagasse boilers

Abstract: The Cuban bagasse-fired boiler industry began with the development of 'RETO' spreader-stoker boilers and the retrofitting of old German boilers with horseshoe furnaces to produce 'RETAL' boilers. Now the main trend is towards modifying the RETO boilers for suspension burning using either vertical swirl (tangential fired) or horizontal swirl furnaces. Consideration of the main theoretical and empirical characteristics of the different boilers, including data on temperature and gas concentration profiles for the different furnaces, suggests that the horizontal swirl furnace is the most promising technical solution for suspension burning of the coarse and polydispersed bagasse produced in Cuba. The adaptation of boilers for bagasse suspension burning using the horizontal swirl furnace system and the design of new high steam parameter boilers are major concerns of the Cuban sugar industry.
