Title: Pulse distortion and induced penalties due to modulation instability in WDM systems

Abstract: Modulation instability (MI) interactions in WDM optical communication systems are shown to give rise to pulse distortion. These distortions are shown to be dependent on the data modulation format. The RZ modulation format gives rise to less pulse distortion than NRZ even in the absence of amplifier noise. Power penalties paid for both modulation formats are the same. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
