Title: Economia moral em James Scott e as perspectivas de seus críticos

Abstract: Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar o conceito de economia moral desenvolvido no livro The Moral Economy of the Peasant. Rebellion and Subsistence in Southeast Asia, do cientista político e antropólogo James C. Scott. Esse livro, publicado em 1976, causou grande controvérsia entre pesquisadores de teoria social e econômica e das formas do campesinato nas sociedades contemporâneas. Analisamos algumas visões desse debate teórico. Estruturamos a argumentação em quatro partes: a primeira analisa a concepção de economia moral em James Scott; a segunda problematiza a crítica formulada por Samuel Popkin ao pensamento de James Scott; a terceira verifica as diversas críticas que enfatizaram os contrastes ou as conexões entre as duas visões teóricas; e, na última parte, apresentamos, brevemente, alguns autores que defendem a possibilidade de aplicação da teoria da economia moral às sociedades contemporâneas

Rebellion and subsistence in Southeast Asia, written bythe political scientist and anthropologist James C. Scott. This book, published in 1976, has generated great controversyamong researchers from social and economic theory and scholars of peasant forms in contemporary societies. Weanalyzesome viewsof this theoretical debate. We structure the argument in fourparts: thefirst analyzes the concept of moral economy inJames Scott; the second discusses the criticism by Samuel Popkin at the thought of James Scott and third checks the various criticisms that emphasized the contrasts and connections between the two theoretical views. Finally, we refer, briefly,to some authors who advocate the use of moral economy forcontemporary societies
