|Author:||Berni, Mauro D.|
Bajay, Sergio V.
|Abstract:||This work presents an overview of certain emerging biorefinery process options in the pulp and paper industry regarding process technologies and factors such as market demand, production flexibility, and the supply chain. The case study is focusing the Brazilian pulp and paper industry, which must identify new valueadded products in order to be competitive. One potential pathway is the forest biorefinery. This paper reviews feedstock availability, novel products easily produced at existing facilities, and existing technologies. Feedstocks include hemicellulose, lignin, organic elements in wastewater, and forestry residuals. Products include fuels, commodity chemicals, biopolymers, and other novel products. Technologies include chemical, thermochemical, and biochemical platforms for products such as bioethanol.|
