Title: Discussion on -rheology behavior and optimal damping effect of granular particles in a non-obstructive particle damper- [J. Sound Vib. 364 (2016) 30–43]

Abstract: This paper is intended to highlight some issues identified in the experimental results provided by Zhang et al. [1,2], as well as concerns with the conclusions of [1]. Consider Figures 4 and 5 from Ref. [1], which are reproduced in our Fig. 1. Figure 4 of [1] depicts the dynamic behavior of a particle impact damper (PID) when subject to normalized accelerations Γ at a fixed gap clearance L = 15 mm. Figure 5 of [1] depicts the dynamic behavior where the normalized acceleration is fixed at Γ = 7.8 and the gap clearance L is varied. If follows that the dynamic behavior for a gap clearance of L = 15 mm and Γ = 7.8 in Figure 4 of [1] has to be identical for the identical conditions in Figure 5 of [1]; they are not. This may best be appreciated by considering the value for the peak response corresponding to these conditions in each of the figures, which is indicated by the circled peak in each of the figures in our Fig. 1; the peak responses are different, but they should not be different. It is possible that the authors have an error in their curve labeling, as may be inferred through consideration of a related plot in Ref. [2]
