Title: Evaluation of bearing's cavitation effects on the rotor dynamic behavior

Abstract: This work evaluates the influence of the cavitation effects of hydrodynamic journal bearings on the rotating system dynamic response. Several simulations were performed in order to determine in which operating conditions the cavitation effects become relevant to the rotors dynamic behavior. The rotating system model is constructed by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM), in which the rotor is supported by hydrodynamic journal bearings. Two different approaches were used to model the journal bearing, being Gumbels condition used for analyses without conservation of mass in cavitation and Elrods cavitation algorithm for analyses with conservation of mass. The results show that the inclusion of conservation of mass in cavitation does not lead to significant changes in the rotors dynamic response under normal operating conditions. However, conditions near to the instability threshold show a significant difference in dynamic response, since the model without conservation of mass reaches this limit before the model that includes these effects
