Objective: To present the Brazilian Portuguese evaluation of CRAFFT scale for screening drug use among adolescents and to evaluate its validity and responsiveness. Method: Descriptive and quantitative study, which evaluated the applicability and responsiveness of the Brazilian Portuguese version of CRAFFT scale (internal consistency of 0,63-0,78) through a convenience sampling of adolescents of 14-21 years attending technical schools. There were three main aspects evaluated: the adolescents difficulty in understanding the scale; the validity of the translated scale comparing a subsample (28,8%) that also responded to the CEBRID questionnaire; and the percentage of adolescents who scored CRAFFT/ CESARE positive in the cutoff already established. It was applied the kappa coefficient to establish correspondence between questionnaires and the ROC curve to evaluate the psychometric differences within different cutoffs. Results: CRAFFT/CESARE scale was applied in 2005 students, of which 1882 is at the determined age range. The minority of students (2,2%) had difficulty in understanding the questions. CRAFFT/CESARE scale's specificity achieved 73.3%, and its sensitivity, 87.1%. The concordance degree (Kappa) was considered good (0,461). The CRAFFT/CESARE scored positive in 36.2% of the adolescents. Visual inspection of ROC curve showed the best cutoff point to be greater than or equal to 2. Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of CRAFFT/CESARE was well understood by the population in study; it has adequate psychometric properties and characteristics that enable its use within the Brazilian sociocultural context.en
