Title: Safety In Pesticides Use And Farmworkers Health Effects In Campinas (sp), Brazil [segurança No Uso De Agrotóxicos E Efeitos Na Saúde De Agricultores Da Região De Campinas (sp)]
Author: Trape A.Z.
Abstract: Background: Agrochemicals are products used in agricultural production. During occupational exposure to them, absorption through skin or inhalation route can occur. Depending on the exposure duration, it can be classified as acute or chronic. Working with agrochemicals requires the use of protection equipments to diminish the exposure, thus their absorption, and therefore, the amount of product that reaches target organs. Objectives: To evaluate whether the use of protection equipments give more protection to the farmworkers health; to recognize the profile of the farmworkers in terms of gender, age, exposure time and type of contact with pesticides; and to identify the relationship between symptoms and occupational exposure. Methods: This report was based on 825 interviews carried out during 2006 and 2007, with farmworkers of the region of Campinas (SP). The actual use of protection equipments, the type of contact of farmworkers with agrochemicals and exposure duration were evaluated as well assigns and symptoms detected. The Ambulatório de Toxicologia of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculdade de Ciências Médicas and the Departamento de Medicina Preventiva e Social of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, responsibles for this task, have evaluated for more than 15 years individuals with long term exposure to agrochemicals. Results: The data showed, in the region of Campinas (SP), the use of protection equipments by farmworkers had significantly increased, making possible safer working conditions. Conclusions: It was confirmed that the use of protection equipments preserves the health of the farmworkers occupationally exposed to agrochemicals.
