Title: Use Of Ionic Liquid As Entrainer For Production Of Anhydrous Ethanol By Extractive Distillation

Abstract: The use of the ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethylphosphate as an entrainer in an extractive distillation column for the production of anhydrous ethanol was studied. The extractive distillation process was simulated and optimized with the HYSYS® software. It was possible to produce high-purity ethanol and the distillation column specified for this separation could operate with a smaller number of plates and a smaller reflux ratio than that for a typical saline extractive distillation process. The ionic liquid could be used as entrainer for extractive distillation to produce anhydrous ethanol. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 18th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering (Prague, Czech Republic 8/24-28/2008).
