|Abstract:||The brazilian sugarcane industry, specially those located in the Centersouth region, is increasing its competitiveness, mainly because Brazil leads the production and dissemination of sugarcane industry technology. As a result, Brazil is considered the most competitive country in production of sugarcane and by-products in the world, also with the lowest production cost rates. Meanwhile, the sugarcane industry located in the state of Pernambuco, in the Northeast region, didn't achivied the same operational performance of the Center-south region, but has achieved high rates of productivity to international standards, to lose competitiveness. The objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of technological and organizational changes that affected the performance of the industry in the state of Pernambuco. The analysis evaluated the operational profile of this industry, in Pernambuco, over crop-season of 2000/01 to 2003/04. The results showed that the industry is obtaining higher levels of production and improving the operational efficiency. Improvements in the industry comes also accompanied by a change in management model, with the incorporation modern practices by business groups as well as the appropriate use of technology.|
