Title: The Mixed Space Of Subjectivity: A Feeling Of (well) Being Between Languages [l'espace Hybride De La Subjectivité : Le (bien)-être Entre Les Langues]
Author: Jose M.
Coracini R.F.
Abstract: This paper aims to problematize the dichotomy mother tongue/foreign language, based on the hypothesis that there is overlapping between them in the constitution of subjectivity. We have analysed the narrative of six speakers of more than one language to observe their feeling between the two languages and which discursive positions they occupy. This study relies on discourse and psychoanalysis theories that take the subject as being split and crossed by the unconscious and the discourse as being responsible for the construction of self-fiction and consequently of identity. We have observed that for some subjects foreign language constitutes a place of rest that permits to forget negative linguistic experiences in the acquisition of the first language, while for others a feeling of discomfort comes up out of a kind of cultural embarrassment resulting from the language of the other in confrontation with their mother tongue. For all of them, the well-being between languages is the most relevant aspect, a benefit coming from knowing other languages, other cultures, the other of the other...
