Title: Observation Of Modulation Instability In The Normal Dispersion Region Over Nonpolarization Preserving Fibers

Abstract: Modulation instability (MI) can be interpreted as four-wave mixing (FWM) between an intense continuous wave pump and noise Fourier components within a certain spectral region where phase matching is satisfied. The experiments were performed in a dispersion shifted fiber (DSF) with measured zero-dispersion wavelength λ0 = 1551.3 nm and 25 km long. The MI sidelobes around the laser in the normal group velocity dispersion (GVD) region are observed only if the laser at λ2 is present and are due to FWM processes involving the two pumps, while the MI sidelobes around λ2 are always present.
