Title: Determination Of The Equivalent Temperature Index (eti) For Semi-confined Holstein Cows

Abstract: Based upon the Equivalent Temperature Index (ETI) developed by BAETA et alli (1987), a software called `PRO LEITE' was designed and tested for black and white, lactating Holstein's cows, housed in semi-confined management, as cited in NAAS et alli (1993). Deviations from the obtained real production graph and the simulated one were verified. It was estimated that the deviations were due to the fact that the Equivalente Temperature Index was developed by it's authors to estimate the thermal confort for totally confined lactating Holstein's cows. To predict the milk production using the Equivalente Temperature Index (ETI) as established in the software `PRO LEITE', for semi-confined lactating Holstein's cows, a mathematical approach was needed. The present research develops a mathematical equation for adjusting the Equivalent Temperature Index (ETI) in order to reflect the milk production in semi-confined herd situation.
