Abstract: This work deals with the problem of obtaining approximations for the optimal control of discrete-time CVIU (Control Variation Increasis Uncertainty) systems, given the knowledge of different optimal solutions in specific regions of the state space. As a first contribution, a formulation of the problem is proposed in the discrete time scenario and from this we discuss the demonstrations to produce an equivalence with the continuous-time case. It is worth mentioning the existence of a region in the state space in which the optimal control action is of non-variation and other non-adjacent regions, where the optimal solutions are well known. With this setting, the need for intermediate optimal solutions is sought and two methods of approximation are presented. The first method employs Approximate Dynamic Programming concepts and it benefits from the problem structure to generate approximations to the optimal cost and control functions. The second method is based on a characteristic observed in the optimal solutions and offers a simpler and direct alternative to approximate the optimal control fuction. Finally, the methods are evaluated and compared based on numerical experimentsen
