Abstract: In this work, I conceive the red clown nose as if it were a media (an intermediating device, a language technology), which is used by certain artists in their spectacles/scenic interventions affected by the imaginary that regulates their relations with their diversified repertoires and with their spectators. With this premise and based on the presentations of the artists selected as participants of this research and interviews performed with them, I try to understand the discursive functioning of this small mask and the statements of the subjects who wear it in three of the different areas of their practice: streets, hospitals and circus-theaters. Supported by the theoretical and methodological device of the Discourse Analysis of French origin (DA), here I present reading gestures on the significant paths, in the interdiscourse of the clownery, that the clowns Tico Bonito, Tubinho and those of the groups Nariz de Cogumelo and Instituto HAHAHA follow with/in front of their audiences. Then, based on the semi-structured interviews perfomed with those clowns (and with their supporting actors in some cases), I explore how they interpret the "clown-public relationship", which is diversified in their varied areas of activity ¿ under specific discursive conditions of production ¿, and how they bring politics into play in different ways. To do so, I picked excerpts out of the consulted literature about clownery as well as of the presentations and interviews for reflecting on how the dicourses about and of the clown circulate senses of clown that constitute a discursive order of their own. Therefore, some of the results of this study are: the comprehension of the imperative of laughter (and its multiple effects) operating in the discourses of clowns, as well as the understanding of the double movement of interpretation of the subjects in the position of clowns whose bodies and imaginary are conformed by a mask. Another consequence of this work is understanding how the conditions of production (immediate and conjunctural) of a spectacle/scenic intervention of clowns and the nature of their spectators: 1) determine the type of relation that they maintain among themselves; 2) establish the relation with the senses of clown in circulation.
