Resumo: A elevada concentração de metano e outros hidrocarbonetos encontrados nos fluídos exalados do Sítio Hidrotermal de Lost City ainda é motivo de debate no meio científico, já que tal sítio apresenta condições amenas de temperatura e pressão (~90 °C e 80 bar). Uma parte da formação de tais hidrocarbonetos é atribuída às reações do tipo Fischer-Tropsch induzida pela interação de moléculas de hidrogênio com dióxido de carbono dissolvidas no oceano na presença de estruturas naturais contendo ferro e níquel. No caso do Sítio Hidrotermal de Lost City, tais estruturas são constituídas primariamente por carbonato de cálcio (CaCO3). Levando em consideração o contexto apresentado, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal desenvolver um método de síntese para a mimetização de estruturas análogas às encontradas em Lost City e avaliar o potencial de redução de níquel e ferro suportados em carbonato de cálcio em atmosfera de hidrogênio. A simulação das estruturas encontradas em Lost City foi caracterizada por microtomografia de raios X e espectroscopia Raman. A estrutura sintetizada apresentou uma fina membrana permeável e um interior poroso. Tais características sugerem que as reações prebióticas catalisadas por materiais reativos no interior dos poros, podem atuar como ambientes propícios para a formação de produtos orgânicos. Para avaliar a capacidade de redução de ferro e níquel suportados em carbonato de cálcio, utilizou-se a técnica de Redução a Temperatura Programada (TPR-H2) e dois métodos de síntese foram escolhidos para os catalisadores: impregnação via úmida (UM) e síntese em reator batelada (BA). O suporte foi sintetizado em reator batelada (80 bar e 90°C por 3 horas) e apresentou tanto a fase aragonita como calcita. No total, foram feitas 6 amostras com diferentes teores de ferro e níquel impregnados na superfície de CaCO3: 2,5% Ni (BA), 2,5% Fe (BA), 2,5% Ni (UM), 2,5% Fe (UM), 2,5% Ni/Fe (BA) e 2,5% Ni/Fe (UM). O método de síntese afetou diretamente a quantidade de metal depositado, sendo que os catalisadores sintetizados via reator batelada, mostram quantidades de ferro e níquel menores que as nominais (valores obtidos por espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de raios X - EDS). O material que apresentou um consumo inicial de hidrogênio em uma menor temperatura foi o 2,5% Ni/Fe (UM) (233 °C). As temperaturas de redução apresentadas pelos catalisadores se encontram acima da temperatura média de Lost City, deste modo, sugere-se que tais metais não são ativos em tais condições

Abstract: The high concentration of methane and other hydrocarbons found in the exhaled fluids of the Lost City Hydrothermal Site is still a matter of debate in the scientific community due to its mild conditions of temperature and pressure (~90 °C and 80 bar). Part of the formation of such hydrocarbons is attributed to Fischer-Tropsch-type reactions induced by the interaction of hydrogen molecules with carbon dioxide dissolved in the ocean in the presence of natural structures containing iron and nickel on its surface. In the case of Lost City Hydrothermal Site, such structures are primarily constituted by calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Considering such context, the present work had the main objective of developing a method of synthesis to mimic structures analogous to those found in Lost City and to evaluate the potential of reduction of nickel and iron supported on calcium carbonate in presence of a hydrogenated atmosphere. The simulation of structures found in Lost City was characterized by X-ray microtomography and Raman spectroscopy. The synthesized structure showed a thin permeable membrane and a porous interior. These characteristics suggest that prebiotic reactions catalyzed by reactive materials inside the pores could act as favorable environments for the formation of organic products. To evaluate the ability to reduce iron and nickel supported on calcium carbonate, the Temperature Programmed Reduction technique (TPR-H2) was used and two synthesis methods were chosen for the catalysts: wet impregnation (UM) and synthesis in batch reactor (BA). The support was synthesized in a batch reactor (80 bar and 90°C for 3 hours) and presented both the Aragonite and Calcite phases. In total, 6 samples were taken with different contents of iron and nickel impregnated on the CaCO3 surface: 2.5% Ni (BA), 2.5% Fe (BA), 2.5% Ni (UM), 2.5 % Fe (UM), 2.5% Ni/Fe (BA) and 2.5% Ni/Fe (UM). The synthesis method directly affected the amount of deposited metal, and the catalysts synthesized via batch reactor, show amounts of iron and nickel lower than the nominal (values obtained by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy - EDS) The catalyst that presented an initial hydrogen consumption at a lower temperature was 2.5% Ni/Fe (UM) (233 °C). The reduction temperatures presented by the catalysts are above the average temperature found in Lost City, which suggested that such metals are not active at those conditions
