Abstract: This work aims to investigate the relationship between the Brazilian popular music and the Latin-American popular music in the 1960s and 1970s, following Milton Nascimento¿s position in it. In the 1960s, the Brazilian Music scene sees the emergence of the so called MPB. Under the aesthetical umbrella of bossa nova and intrinsically related to the development of Brazilian phonographic market and to the cultural politics of national-popular, the MPB establishes itself as a "cultural institution", able to provide the standards to the engaged production of what was authentically considered "national" and "popular". In the same period, movements of renovation of the popular music pop up in many other countries of Latin America. These movements, on the whole classified as nueva canción latino-americana [new song movement], will strongly be influenced by the traditional folklore and will center their productions in a particular kind of engaged song, committed to social causes and to the defense of a Latin-American identity. Since the relationship of Brazilian artists with the new song movement is not taken for granted, this thesis seeks to demonstrate its very existence and, at the same time, to identify the social conditions that helps to explain its peculiarity. Our hypothesis is that the centrality of the national matter, the influence of bossa nova¿s aesthetics and the high capacity of absorption of the national phonographic market contributed, at first, to distancing the production of Brazilian engaged song from the new song movement. With the rearrange of the national music scene at the end of the 1960s, there is, nonetheless, an opening to songs produced in Latin-America. Among other things, this approach was due to the semantics similarities observed within the symbolic background underlying each musical scene ¿ namely, the national-popular in the MPB and the Latin-American-popular in the new song movement. Following chiefly the trajectory of Milton Nascimento, analyzed in the light of other Latin-American artists engaged in the integration of the Latin America throw means of the music scene and the song production, we seek to discuss the particularities of the Latin-Americanism that evolved in Brazil
