Abstract: This study evaluated the potencial use of a compund known as Compound E (CE) which is used as inoculant in the recycled paper mill effluent (RPME) biodegradation process. This compoud is made of bovinne manure that has been fermented in liquid and then added to the reactors in sequencial batches in a laboraroty scale to asses the aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In the course of this study, several adaptations were made in the reactors and treatment characteristics in order to maxime the removal of organic load from RPME. The most effective treatment system was the sequential batch reactor (SBR) with the preservation of the sludge. The treatment was carried out in anaerobic and aerobic reactors (6 L) where two reactors were used for each condition: one of them is inoculated and received 5% (300 mL) of CE on the days which the analyzes were carried out; and the other works as a control, without the addition of CE. The anaerobic batches were submitted to a 24-hour hydraulic retention time; whereas the aerobic batches were submitted to a 6-hour aeration period followed by 2 additional hours of sedimentation, totalizing an 8-hour cycle. On the other days, the effluent was exchanged (emptying and filling) in every 24 hours, except on Saturdays and Sundays. To evaluate the efficiency of the treatment, the following parameters were analyzed: COD, temperature, pH, alkalinity, conductivity, total dissolved solids and volatile suspended solids. For the analysis of the results, the ANOVA and Tukey Tests (? = 0,01) were used. The non-inoculated aerobic and anaerobic treatments did not show significant statistical difference between them, evidencing that both treatments can be used for paper recycling effluents. However, the pairs of aerobic and anaerobic reactors presented a statistical difference between them when inoculated or not. This result can be observed analytically by the accentuation of the organic matter removal efficiency in the aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes of 42 and 29%, respectively. Therefore, the use of CE as an inoculum proved to be an alternative to increase the organic loading removal efficiency in the biological treatment of effluents from the paper recycling industry
